No. 4 Buckeyes Move to 2-0, Down Columbia 33-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Ohio State (2-0) started the weekend with a 33-6 win over Columbia (0-1) at the Covelli Center (Att: 3,271) Friday before traveling to take on No. 17 North Carolina Sunday (noon/ESPN+).

125 | No. 11 Malik Heinselman (OSU) def. Nick Babin (COL) | MD, 17-4    

Heinselman struck first with a takedown followed by a Babin escape. Heinselman quickly scored again to take a 4-1 lead. The score entering the second favored the Buckeyes, 6-2. The lead increased to 16-4 Heinselman after the second period and that’s the way the bout ended, for a Heinselman win by major decision, 17-4.

133 | No. 13 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. Angelo Rini (COL) | MD, 12-2

Mendez got the opening takedown and built more than two minutes of riding time and ended the period up 3-0 after Rini was called for stalling. Mendez escaped to start the second and added a takedown for a 6-0 lead after two. Mendez finished off the match with a couple more takedowns to win by major decision, 12-2.

141 | Jordan Decatur (OSU) def. No. 17 Matt Kazimir (COL) | D, 3-1

Decatur posted the first points of the match with a takedown in the first. Decatur was called for stalling to make it 2-1 entering the third. With a point for riding time, Decatur won by decision, 3-1.

149 | Danny Fongaro (COL) def. Klay Reeves (OSU) | D, 7-4

Fongaro scored near the end of the first with a takedown for a 2-0 lead heading into the second. An escape and takedown made it 5-0 Columbia to open the second. Reeves escaped and added a takedown sending the match to the third trailing 6-3 after a Fongaro escape. Fongaro then held on to win by decision, 7-4.

157 | No. 21 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. Andy Garr (COL) | D, 11-4  

The Buckeyes scored first with a Gallagher takedown a minute into the first. Gallagher led 4-1 after the first three minutes following a late takedown. It was 4-2 OSU to open the third when Gallagher added an escape and takedown to lead 7-2. With a penalty point for stalling and another point for riding time, Gallaher won by decision, 11-4.

165 | No. 6 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. No. 10 Josh Ogunsanya (COL) | D, 6-3

Kharchla scored the only points of the first period on a takedown for a 2-0 lead. He added an escape to open the second followed by another takedown for a 5-0 lead after five minutes. Kharchla finished off the match to win by decision, 6-3.

174 | Lennox Wolak (COL) def. No. 6 Ethan Smith (OSU) | D, 8-6

Smith led after the first period 4-2. Wolak took the lead briefly with an escape and takedown early in the second before Smith tied it at 5-all with an escape. Smith escaped to start the third for a 6-5 lead but was then called for stalling to give Wolak a point for the tie. Wolak then went up 8-6 with a takedown for the win by decision.

Romero scored a quick takedown and a four-point near fall for a 6-0 lead. Romero added four more takedowns to build a 14-4 lead after one period. The lead was 18-6 after the second. The match ended with a Romero escape, a stalling point and a takedown for a technical fall win, 22-6.

197 | No. 15 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) def. Javen Jovero (COL) | TF 27-8

Hoffman scored first with a pair of takedowns and led after the first period, 8-3. Hoffman escaped and added a takedown to open the second. He then built the lead to 17-6 heading into the third and finished off the match to win by technical fall, 27-8.

After a scoreless first period, Tate scored first with a reversal and then won by fall at 3:54.
