How it Happened
Ohio State scored first but Notre Dame grabbed an early 3-2 lead before five-straight Buckeye points gave OSU the 7-3 advantage. The Buckeyes maintained at least a three-point lead before the Irish trimmed it to 13-11 with back-to-back points. Ohio State kept the pressure on with a kill from Rylee Rader making it 18-14 and forcing a Notre Dame timeout. The Irish used a 4-0 run to tie the set at 21 but the Buckeyes scored the next two points and went on to take the set, 25-23, on a Rader kill.
The Irish led the beginning of the second set before four-consecutive OSU points gave the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. A string of three-straight kills from Mia Grunze increased the Ohio State advantage to 10-6. OSU maintained its lead of no less than two but no more than four, until a kill from Rader put the Buckeyes up 17-12 and forced an Irish timeout. Notre Dame scored four of the next five points to cut Ohio State’s lead to 18-16. After trading points and holding the 20-18 advantage, the Buckeyes scored five of the last six points to take the set by a 25-19 margin.
After surrendering the first point of set three, the Buckeyes scored the next three points on the floor to take a lead that would not be relinquished. The Irish came within one on two occasions and trailed 10-8 before a 5-0 Buckeye run put OSU up 15-8. Ohio State extended its lead up to nine, 21-12, before a Notre Dame run cut the lead down to 23-19.
