No. 3 Buckeyes Split Dual Matches Monday in New Orleans

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State (5-1) earned career dual win No. 299 for Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes, after splitting a pair of duals Monday at the 2022 Collegiate Duals at the New Orleans Convention Center.

Ohio State knocked off Lock Haven in the first dual of the day 39-3 with three Buckeyes earning wins by fall.

Sammy Sassy (149), Gavin Hoffman (197) and Mike Misita (HWT) pinned their Lock Haven opponents to score 18 of Ohio State’s 39 points in the win.

Ohio State then fell to No. 22 Northern Iowa 19-13 to close out the day.

Malik Heinselman (125), Nic Bouzakis (133), Ethan Smith (174) and Hoffman each went 2-0 on the day.

The Buckeyes will wrestle for third place against No. 21 Lehigh at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

How it Happened (vs. Lock Haven)

125 | No. 11 Malik Heinselman (OSU) def. No. 20 Anthony Noto (LH) | D, 7-4

Heinselman scored first with a late takedown in the first. It was a 2-1 OSU lead to start the second when Heinselman escaped for a 3-1 advantage early in the second. The lead was 5-2 with two minutes to go when the Buckeyes made it 7-4 after a Noto escape, a Heinselman takedown and another Noto escape. That’s how it ended with a Heinselman win by decision, 7-4.

133 | Nic Bouzakis (OSU) def. Gable Strickland (LH) | D, 6-0

With a double-leg takedown midway through the first, Bouzakis took a 2-0 lead. Bouzakis escaped to open the second and then added a scrambling takedown for a 5-0 lead and a 6-0 win by decision.

141 | No. 18 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) def. Tyler Dilley (LH) | MD, 11-3

D’Emilio started things off with a takedown for a 2-0 lead. Dilley tied it at 2-all with a takedown in the second period but D’Emilio quickly responded with an escape and takedown to reclaim the lead at 5-2. D’Emilio built a 10-3 lead in the third to win by major decision, 11-3.

149 | No. 3 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. Nick Stonecheck (LH) | Fall, 6:34

Stonecheck opened with a takedown but Sasso escaped and added a takedown to take a 3-2 lead. Stonecheck tied it at 3-all with an escape. Sasso added three takedowns to lead 9-5 after one period. A pair of Sasso takedowns made it 14-6 with two minutes left. The win was secured with a fall at 6:34.

157 | Isaac Wilcox (OSU) def. Ashton Eyler (LH) | D, 8-7    

Wilcox got the early takedown for a 2-0 lead. After two more takedowns, Wilcox led 6-2 after the first. With only an Eyler escape in the second, Wilcox headed to the third with a 6-3 lead. Eyler rallied with a pair of takedowns but Wilcox claimed the win by decision with a point of riding time, 8-7.

Basset got on the board first with an early takedown and held a 2-1 advantage going into the second. The Haven then finished off the match for an 8-2 win by decision.

174 | No. 7 Ethan Smith (OSU) def. Tyler Stoltzfus (LH) | MD, 16-6

Three quick takedowns put Smith up 6-2. He headed to the second with an 8-3 lead. Smith added a reversal to open the second and then added a takedown for a 12-4 advantage. Smith closed out the match with a 16-6 win by major decision.

184 | No. 5 Kaleb Romero (OSU) def. Colin Fegley (LH) | MD, 16-6

Romero jumped to a 4-1 led on two quick takedowns and finished the first period leading 6-2. The lead was 13-4 Buckeyes heading into the third period, Romero added a takedown and with riding time, won by major decision, 16-6.

197 | No. 22 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) def. Brad Morrison (LH) | Fall, 1:10

Hoffman wasted little time earning the win with a pin 1:10 into the first period.

HWT | Mike Misita (OSU) def. Ethan Miller (LH) | Fall, 1:38  

Misita scored a takedown and added four points with a near fall to lead 6-0. He then got the pin at 1:38 to close out the match for the Buckeyes.

There was no score after the first two periods. Biscoglia scored first with an escape and a takedown before Bouzakis scored a reversal. Biscoglia countered with another reversal to lead 5-3. Bouzakis then got a takedown and a four-point near fall for a come-from-behind victory by decision, 9-6.

D’Emilio got on the board first with a takedown. Happel added a reversal before D’Emilio escaped to maintain a lead at 3-2 going into the second. Happel earned the escape to tie it up 3-all. D’Emilio went up 4-3 with an escape to start the third. Happel scored a takedown and with riding time, the match went to sudden victory tied at 5-all. Happel then got the winning takedown to win by decision, 7-5.

The first takedown of the match went to Sasso midway through the first period. Realbuto escaped to finish the period with Sasso on top, 2-1. Realbuto went up 5-2 with a four-point near fall at the end of two periods. Sasso added a pair of takedowns in the third but Realbuto held on to earn the win by decision, 9-7.

Yant scored first with a takedown in the first and then added another in the second to lead 4-0 with a period to go. Yant built the lead to 11-1 in the third to win by major decision, 11-1.

After a scoreless first, Romero scored first with an escape to open the second for a 1-0 lead. Keckeisen countered with a takedown to lead 2-1 to close out the second period. Keckeisen escaped early in the third for a 3-1 advantage and won by decision, 3-1.

Hoffman got the first takedown and added two more to lead 6-3 after the first period. Glaser escaped to open the second before Hoffman countered with three takedowns to lead 12-6 after two. Hoffman escaped and scored a takedown to go up 15-9 and finished off the match to win my major decision, 18-8.

Gordon put the first two points on the board with a takedown for a 2-0 lead. The wrestlers traded escapes to make it 3-1 Gordon after the second. Orndorff escaped in the third but Gordon held on for the win by decision, 3-2.
