COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2/3 Ohio State women’s hockey team concludes the 2021-22 regular season this weekend against No. 3/2 Wisconsin at the OSU Ice Rink. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to this weekend being the last regular season series, the Buckeyes will honor 11 senior and fifth-year members of the team prior to the game on Saturday. The ceremony will start at 2 p.m.
Both games will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
Buckeyes in a Nutshell
- Ohio State returns to Columbus after a five-game Minnesota road trip. The Buckeyes played series at Minnesota State and Bemidji State with a rescheduled game against St. Cloud State in between. The team finished the trip 4-1-0.
- The Buckeyes are tied for second in the WCHA standings headed into the final weekend of the regular season. With a 19-6-0 record in conference play this season, Ohio State is tied with Wisconsin in points percentage (.760) and behind Minnesota (.795).
- Ohio State enters the weekend rated No. 2 in the USCHO.com poll with 129 points and one first-place vote. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Maganize poll, the Buckeyes are third with 147 points.
- With a record of 23-6-0 so far this year, the Scarlet and Gray are one win from tying the program’s single-season record. Ohio State earned 24 wins in the 2019-20 and 2017-18 seasons.
- Sophie Jaques, Paetyn Levis, Liz Schepers and Gabby Rosenthal lead the Buckeyes with 17 goals each. Jaques takes the lead in assists (35) and points (52).
- Amanda Thiele is 10-3-0 in goal for Ohio State this year. The sophomore has made 281 saves and owns a .937 save percentage.
Notable Notes
- Ohio State has seen record-breaking success on offense this season, setting a program single-season high in assists (243) and goals (145). The Buckeyes lead the nation in assists, goal and points so far this year.
- The Buckeyes are 12-2-0 at the OSU Ice Rink headed into the final home series of the regular season.
- When scoring first, Ohio State is 19-3-0 this year. The Buckeyes have scored 47 goals in the opening frame this season.
- Line mates Paetyn Levis, Liz Schepers and Clair DeGeorge combine for the most points on the year for Ohio State with 117 so far. Each of the players is tied for second, along with Jenna Buglioni, in points this season for the team (39).
- All 21 of Ohio State’s skaters have recorded two or more points this season. Goaltender Amanda Thiele has also tallied two points this year, making it 22 of 25 Buckeyes with at least two points on the season.
Have a Season, Sophie!
- Despite being a defenseman, Sophie Jaques is among the top point-producers this season.
- Jaques is first in the NCAA in scoring average this season with 1.79 points per game. She has recorded the most assists per game this season, averaging 1.21.
- The senior has recorded 52 points this season, three points and three games behind the leader.
- Jaques took the Ohio State record for points in a single season by a defenseman in the Buckeye’s series at Minnesota State on Feb. 4-5.
- A civil engineering major from Toronto, Ont., Jaques has scored the most points by a defenseman since the 2015-16 season when Megan Keller (Boston College) recorded 52 points (12 G, 40 A).
- On Feb. 12, she became the 14th Ohio State Buckeye to record 100 career points. In 122 games as a Buckeye, she has averaged 0.828 points per game for her career.
Honoring the 2021-22 Seniors
- Prior to Saturday’s game, Ohio State will recognize this year’s senior class for their hard work and commitment to this program over the last four to five years.
- The group features five true seniors in Andrea Braendli, Sophie Jaques, Paetyn Levis, Gabby Rosenthal, Sara Saekkinen and Eve Savander.
- Also being honored are fifth-year graduate students Emily Curlett, Clair DeGeorge, Liz Schepers and Lexi Templeman.
History vs. Wisconsin
- Ohio State is 17-75-10 all-time against Wisconsin.
- In the last meeting between the teams in October, the Buckeyes battled but fell 3-1 in the first game and 2-1 in overtime in game two.
- The Buckeyes are 4-6-0 against the Badgers in Columbus during since head coach Nadine Muzerall took over in 2016-17.
2022 Winter Olympics
- Emma Maltais, Natalie Spooner and Team Canada took gold on Wednesday night. The pair earn Ohio State women’s hockey’s fourth gold medal and 11th podium finish overall.
- Jincy Dunne earned silver in her Olympic debut for Team USA.
- Minttu Tuominen and Team Finland won the bronze medal match against Switzerland on Wednesday morning. The medal is Tuominen’s third of her Olympic career.
- Switzerland’s Andrea Braendli backstopped her team to a fourth-place finish.
Around the WCHA
- Entering the final weekend of regular season play before the conference tournament, four WCHA teams are rated among the top five nationally. Minnesota leads both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls with the No. 1 spot. Ohio State and Wisconsin alternate the second and third spot while Minnesota Duluth ranks fifth.
- Minnesota and St. Thomas meet for a home-and-home series on Thursday and Saturday.
- Bemidji State takes a trip to Minnesota State for their final regular-season action and St. Cloud State visits Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday.
