TULSA, Okla. – Over the past week, the Ohio State men's tennis team has been competing at the ITA All-American Championships. The All-American Championships offers a way for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournament that will take place at the end of the season in Athens, Ga. Yesterday, four Buckeyes made the cut for the NCAA Tournament.
Nikita Filin reached the quarterfinals of ITA All-Americans to qualify for NCAA Singles for the first time in his collegiate career. Later that day he also qualified for NCAA Doubles with Brandon Carpico for a second straight year. The pair has been dominant throughout the tournament, playing in three matches and not dropping a set against ranked opponents.
The No. 15 ranked pairing of Bryce Nakashima and Aidan Kim also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for a second year in a row. Kim and Nakashima reached the tournament semifinals after facing the No. 18 and No. 12 preseason ranked pairings in the round of 32 and quarterfinals.
Last year, both doubles pairings qualified for the tournament, but both had their tournament runs ended by Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich from Virginia. Kim and Nakashima faced the eventual national champions in the NCAA quarterfinals for a long three-set battle, while Filin and Carpico reached the tournament finals to face the pair from Virginia. Both sets of Buckeyes were named doubles All-Americans for reaching the NCAA quarterfinals.
What's Next
Filin's singles run ended in the quarterfinals last night, after falling to No. 6 Keegan Rice in two sets. Nakashima and Kim are also playing in the doubles semifinals today, with Kim and Preston Stearns continuing singles competition in the round of 16 of the consolation draw. The two finalists from the singles consolation draw also will also qualify for the NCAA tournament.
