No. 5 Buckeyes Win Big Ten Title with 4-2 Win over Washington

Conference tournament commences Thursday in Columbus
 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 5 ranked Ohio State women's tennis team beat No. 22 Washington 4-2 Sunday to clinch the Big Ten regular season title. Ohio State is now 21-3 overall and 12-1 in the Big Ten. Washington is 18-4 and 9-4 in league play. Â

Against the Huskies, the Buckeyes took the lead early on posting doubles victories from Audrey Spencer and Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev and Luciana Perry and Flora Johnson. The singles points were clinched from Teah Chavez in straight sets as well as Cisse-Ignatiev and Nao Nishino in three sets. Â

The Buckeyes last won the conference in 2022 after sharing the 2021 crown with Michigan. Ohio State also tied for first in 2017 and won the championship outright in 2016, with 11-0 B1G records in both campaigns. The squad shared the Big Ten regular season title in 2000 for its first championship. This year Ohio State, Michigan and USC were all 12-1 in Big Ten play to share the regular season title. Â

How it HappenedÂ
- On court three, the duo of Audrey Spencer and Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev beat Reece Carter and Jermine Sherif 6-2. Â
- To earn the doubles point for the Buckeyes, No. 30 ranked Luciana Perry and Flora Johnson won 6-3 against Alexia Jacobs and Marie Weissheim on court one. Â
- After losses on courts two and five, No. 5 ranked Chavez clinched Ohio State's first singles point with a 6-2, 7-6 (1) win against No. 82 ranked Erika Matsuda on court one. Â
- Court three's 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory from Cisse-Ignatiev over Alexia Jacobs gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead.Â
- To earn the conference title, No. 77 ranked Nishino defeated Weissheim 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 on court four. Â
- Perry and Johnson are first for the Buckeyes in doubles with an 12-2 record this spring, while Spencer and Cisse-Ignatiev are 9-3.Â
- In singles, Nishino moved her record to 13-5 in dual play and she is first on the team with 27 wins overall. Chavez is 14-1 in dual matches and Cisse-Ignatiev is 8-6.Â

The Schedule AheadÂ
- Ohio State will serve as the host of the 2026 Big Ten Tennis Tournament. The Top 12 teams in the final Big Ten standings will compete for the trophy. The Top 4 seeds, including the Buckeyes, receive a bye into the quarterfinals. There will be four first round matches Thursday, four quarterfinal matches Friday, two semifinals Saturday and the final Sunday. The bracket will be announced later today. Â
