No. 10 Buckeyes Advance to ITA Indoors Final with Win over No. 2 Texas A&M

Ohio State will take on Georgia for the indoor national title Tuesday
COLUMBUS, Ohio –The No. 5 seed and No. 10-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team earned a berth in the championship match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-2 win over No. 3 seed and No. 2 ranked Texas A&M Monday evening in Evanston, Ill.

The Buckeyes (5-0) will compete in the indoor championship final for the first time in program history. The squad was also a semifinalist in 2016 and '17.

In the final, the Buckeyes will take on 2 seed and No. 1 ranked Georgia at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Evanston, Ill. The Bulldogs defeated No. 1 seed and No. 4-ranked Auburn 4-3 in the other semifinal. Ohio State and Georgia last met in the first round of the 2024 ITA National Indoor Championship, a 4-3 Buckeye victory. Ohio State is 2-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.

In the semifinals against Texas A&M (8-2), Ohio State dropped the doubles point but won four singles matches to advance. After the Aggies took a 2-0 lead with a court two win, Teah Chavez posted a court one victory, followed by a win from Audrey Spencer on court six. Freshman Hephzibah Oluwadare moved the Buckeyes ahead, 3-2, with a court five win and Nao Nishino clinched the team victory on court four. Â

How it Happened
- Ohio State dropped the doubles point for the second consecutive match, as Texas A&M won on courts one and three. The Buckeye duo of Flora Johnson and Luciana Perry was serving for the match when doubles was clinched.
- To start singles, the Buckeyes captured four first sets.
- Texas A&M moved ahead 2-0 with a straight set win by No. 41 Lucciana Perry over No. 3 Perry on court two.
- Teah Chavez, ranked 13th and playing No. 1 for the first time this season, defeated No. 46 Mia Kupres, 6-2, 6-4, for a 2-1 team score. In the second set, the players were on serve until Chavez broke at love to capture the final game.
- On court six, Audrey Spencer rolled to a 6-1 first set win against Anna Perelman. In the second set, Spencer was down a break early but was able to get back on serve. She broke for a 5-4 lead and served it out to tie the team match.
- Freshman Hephzibah Oluwadare, who clinched the quarterfinal win, downed No. 96 Daria Smetannikov, 6-3, 6-4, on court five to move the Buckeyes within a point of the team win. The Buckeye jumped out to a 3-0 lead in both sets en route to the win.
- Sophomore Nao Nishino provided the clinching point for the Buckeyes with a court four victory against Violeta Martinez. Nishino battled back from an early deficit in the first set and won four of the final five games for a 6-4 win. In the second set, Nishino opened with a 4-0 lead and closed it out, 6-2.
- The final match was abandoned with Texas A&M up a set and a break on court three.
- Chavez and Spencer are both 3-0 in singles at ITA Indoors, with Oluwadare 2-0.
- The win was the Buckeyes' first over Texas A&M in four matches.
