
Buckeyes Fall in a Shootout to Rutgers Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team fell to Rutgers, 3-2, Friday at Buckeye Varsity Field.
The Buckeyes (4-8, 0-4 B1G) overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half to take the game to overtime, but fell to the Scarlet Knights (7-6, 1-2 B1G) in a three-round shootout.
How it Happened

In the first quarter, Ohio State's defense held Rutgers to just one shot. The Buckeyes successfully defended the first penalty corner of the day to keep the game scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play.

The Scarlet Knights started the second quarter with a goal off a penalty corner at 15:44. The Buckeye offense recorded five shots but was unable to capitalize and trailed the Scarlet Knights, 1-0, after 30 minutes of play.

Rutgers had the player advantage to start the second half after a late second-quarter green card on the Buckeyes. The Scarlet Knights used that opportunity to double the lead, 2-0, 23 seconds into the half.

Ohio State cut into the Rutgers lead with a goal from Sienna Golden at 40:06. Victoria Kutz sent a pass into the middle of the circle where Golden knocked it past the Rutgers' goalkeeper and into the cage.

Emily Barker tied the game, 2-2, at 45:29 on a penalty stroke.

With four minutes to play, Carmela Maro hit the post, and the game remained tied, 2-2, to send things to overtime.

In overtime, Avery Alleva made four saves to keep the Scarlet Knights off the board. In the final two and a half minutes, a shot from Barker was high, and a Maro shot was saved to send the game to a shootout.

The Buckeyes and Scarlet Knights went into a three-round shootout, with Rutgers ultimately coming out victorious to earn the 3-2 win.
