The award honors the best shooting guards in men’s college basketball
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior guard John Mobley Jr. has been named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Top 20 Preseason Watch List. This award is presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame, highlighting the elite talent in the sport.
The annual Jerry West Award, named after the late Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 13th year by highlighting the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I men's college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 30. In February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2027 Jerry West Award will be narrowed to 10, then to five in March. In late March, the five finalists will be presented to West's family and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where the winner will be selected.
One of the Big Ten's most dangerous perimeter shooters, Mobley Jr. enters the season after earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors in 2025-26. He averaged 15.7 points and 2.8 assists per game while ranking among the Big Ten leaders in both three-point percentage and three-pointers made per game. His 97 three-pointers last season were the fourth-most in a single season in Ohio State history. Mobley helped lead the Buckeyes back to the NCAA Tournament last year and finished his first tournament appearance with 15 points and six assists against TCU.
A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Mobley has developed into one of the conference's premier guards since arriving in Columbus. Through two seasons, he has appeared in 63 games with 53 starts and has averaged 14.3 points per game while making 174 career three-pointers.
The Buckeyes open the regular season on Monday, Nov. 2 against No. 25 BYU in Salt Lake City.
