COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's hockey team picked up three Western Collegiate Hockey Association player of the week awards, the conference announced Monday. The Buckeyes earned a sweep of the then-ranked No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers in the home opener last weekend at the OSU Ice Rink.
The league named Sanni Vanhanen Forward of the Week, Mira Jungåker Defender of the Week and Rowan Houweling Rookie of the Week.
Vanhanen earns her first career WCHA player of the week award for her performance against Wisconsin as she tied for a team-high two goals and finished the weekend with three points. The sophomore forward assisted the game-winning goal in game one's 2-1 victory and scored twice, including the game-tying goal, in the 5-3 win in game two.
Vanhanen's two-goal performance in game two tied her career high for goals in a game. She recorded a goal and an assist on the power play to help the Buckeyes finish 4-for-7 on the power play against the Badgers.
Houweling picks up the rookie nod for her play against the Badgers. In her first career games at the OSU Ice Rink, the Edmonton, Alberta native posted back-to-back 20-plus save performances. Each game was a career-best performance as recorded her first 20 save game in the 2-1 win Friday and made 22 stops in the 5-3 game two victory.
Houweling, now 4-0-0 on the year, kept Wisconsin, who averaged 5.75 goals per game entering the weekend, to just four goals in the series. She is just the second freshman netminder for Ohio State to earn a sweep over the Badgers.
Jungåker earns the league's Defender of the Week award for the second straight week. She led the Buckeyes for the second consecutive weekend in assists, this week tallying four. The junior also recorded a team-high five-point series from the blue line.
In game one, Jungåker scored the game-tying goal and assisted the game-winning goal, both the power play. In game two, she assisted the game-tying goal and both the Buckeyes' third period goals, including the game-winner. Jungåker also helped lead the Buckeye defensive effort to hold the Badgers, who were averaging 40.00 shots per game, to just 23.00 shots per game on the weekend.
