Okonkwo Named Big Ten Player of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Alex Okonkwo, a junior from Maidenhead, England, was named the Big Ten Player of the Week Wednesday after posting three victories last week in 4-0 wins over Toledo and Xavier to open the 2026 season.Â
Okonkwo won both doubles matches and a singles match against the Musketeers.
Against Toledo, Okonkwo and partner Alexander Bernard defeated the Rockets' Cole Cozens and Charlie Snow, 6-0. The Buckeye pair, ranked No. 10 nationally, then defeated Xavier's Alex Kotarski and Max Pettingell, 6-1.Â
Ranked No. 48 in singles, Okonkwo defeated Samuel Frizelle of Xavier at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.Â
Ohio State is back in action at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus Friday and Saturday in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.Â
The Buckeyes open with North Alabama at 10 a.m. Friday. Purdue and Old Dominion face off at 1 p.m. The consolation match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday after the championship at 4 p.m.
