COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from visiting Ohio on Saturday night, 37-9. The Buckeyes are now 3-0 on the season and will have a bye week next week before opening Big Ten play at Washington on Sept. 27.
Sophomore wide receiver Jerimiah Smith tied a career high with nine receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score which was the second rushing touchdown of his career. Fellow sophomore Julian Sayin was 25-of-32 for 347 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with eight different receivers as Carnell Tate joined Smith with his second 100-yard receiving game of his career. Tate finished with 101 yards on five catches, including a 49-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
On the ground, freshman Bo Jackson topped 100 yards on less than 10 carries for the second consecutive game. He finished with 109 yards on nine carries with a long of 64. The Buckeyes had 572 yards of total offense and weren’t forced to punt all night, the first time that happened in a game since 2021. The defense was stout once again, holding Ohio to under 130 yards of offense until the final drive of the game. Linebacker Arvell Reese made a career-high seven tackles and had two pass breakups, the first two of his career.
First Quarter

The Buckeyes took the opening kickoff right down the field but came up short on fourth and goal. The big play on the drive was a 42-yard pass from Julian Sayin to Jerimiah Smith. After an Ohio punt, the Buckeyes once again put on a drive, but this time, settled for a 38-yard field goal by Jayden Fielding. They would force another OU punt and take a 3-0 lead into the quarter break. Smith had four catches for 66 yards in the quarter.

Second Quarter
No. 1 Ohio State 13, Ohio University 3
Ohio State took over at its 35-yard line and drove all the way down to the Ohio 2-yard line before stalling out once again. Fielding came on and made his second field goal of the night, a 20-yard kick, to put the Buckeyes in front 6-0. Now with its second-string quarterback, OU got just one first down on its next drive before punting. The Buckeyes then went 77 yards on eight plays and found the endzone for the first time as Sayin hit Max Klare in the back of the endzone for a 16-yard score. The Buckeye defense stepped up again and forced another punt with two minutes left in the half. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Sayin’s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and OU intercepted the deflection. The Bobcats would turn that into a 44-yard field goal and the score was 13-3 Buckeyes at the half.

Third Quarter
No. 1 Ohio State 23, Ohio University 9
Ohio stunned the Ohio Stadium crowd just two plays into the second half as Chase Hendricks caught a pass and scampered 67 yards for a touchdown. Ohio then gained just eight yards on its next drive before punting to the Buckeyes who back endzone in just four plays. Sayin hit Smith for a 47-yard score and the Buckeyes led 23-9 after three quarters.
