Seven sports contribute points; award includes $250,000 for scholarships
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Department of Athletics' men's sports programs have earned the 2024-25 Capital One Cup as the top men's athletics program for the past year. This is the first time for Ohio State's men or women to win the award, presented annually to the best Division I athletics programs.
Ohio State athletics will be awarded $250,000 from Capital One for student-athlete scholarships for finishing first.
"I want to thank Capital One for its stewardship of this important program that ultimately honors student-athletes, coaches and the support staffs who take great pride in what they do," Ross Bjork, Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletics Director, said. "We had a highly successful and memorable year on the field in 2024-25, a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence that our student-athletes display.
"I continue to be inspired on a daily basis by the people who uphold and enhance Ohio State's long-standing tradition of excellence in everything that we do."
The Ohio State men captured first place with 113.5 points that were compiled via a combination of national championships or Top 10 national poll rankings. Seven sports contributed to the points total: football (1st), soccer (3rd), wrestling (5th), fencing (6th), tennis (6th), gymnastics (7th) and lacrosse (9th).
The top five men's programs this year were Ohio State followed by Penn State (82 points), Florida (81), Texas (66) and Cornell (64).
"We are happy to celebrate the Ohio State University men's athletics program for a fantastic year of competition, defined by dedication and resiliency," said Stephanie Mosley, Senior Director of Brand Sponsorships and Experiential Marketing at Capital One. "We are proud to continue our Capital One Cup program, which has awarded over $5 million in student athlete scholarship fund donations."
The Ohio State women were 34th in this year's Capital One Cup standings.
Eighth in LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings
It's been a good year for the Ohio State department of athletics. In June it was announced that the department finished eighth in the final LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings for the 2024-25 academic/athletic year. The Directors' Cup Standings honor institutions maintaining a broad-based program and achieving success in its NCAA sports programs.

The eight men's sports contributing points from the College Football Playoffs and NCAA championship competition were football (1st), soccer (3rd), wrestling (5th), gymnastics (7th), hockey (9th), lacrosse (9th), tennis (9th) and swimming and diving (16th).
