Buckeye football is lone D1 football program with perfect multi-year score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate data shows Ohio State and its student-athletes and athletic programs continue to perform at an outstanding level in the classroom.
In the 21st year of APR data for most teams, the scores provide a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years.
Ohio State posted a cross-sport multi-year rate of 990. Of the 31 Buckeye sport programs in the data, seven have a multi-year score of 1,000, with another 12 posting a score of at least 990. Ohio State football is the only Division I football program with a score of 1,000. The 2023-24 single-year rate for Ohio State as a department was 990.Â
Dr. John Davidson, Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative, highlighted the success across the department's programs.
"After maintaining record-high Graduation Success Rate numbers in the autumn, OSU's student-athletes continue to impress with this year's APR scores," Davidson said. "Half of our programs hold perfect single-year marks, more than half achieved a multi-year score above 990/1000, and our national champions in football boast the only perfect multi-year score in the sport across NCAA Division I."
Â
In all, seven programs had perfect multi-year scores, with men's and women's cross country, men's fencing, men's golf, women's soccer and women's volleyball joining football.
"At a time when media attention is myopically focused on money in college athletics, our student-athletes consistently demonstrate that academic opportunity through sport is still at the heart of the enterprise," Davidson said. "Their success is a tribute not just to their hard work but to an athletics culture embraced by coaches, administrators, and support staff that holds education to be a primary goal."
Â
In the single-year results for 2023-24, 18 Ohio State programs had perfect scores: men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's fencing, men's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's lacrosse, softball, women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's track and field, men's and women's volleyball and wrestling.

This academic year, 250 Buckeyes have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team, including a school record 147 honored from fall sports, with spring and at-large sports honors to be awarded later this month, and 805 were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes. At autumn commencement, 50 current and former student-athletes received their degrees and 212 received their degrees at spring commencement Sunday.
