
Noel’s Double-Double Pushes Buckeyes Past App State, 75-53

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State continued its strong start to the season Tuesday night at Value City Arena, defeating Appalachian State, 75–53, in the Buckeyes’ third consecutive home win to open the year.
Fifth year forward Brandon Noel (Lucasville, Ohio) led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double of the season on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Ohio State trailed by as many as 12 in the first half before closing on a 20–5 run, capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior guard Bruce Thornton (Fairburn, Ga.) to give the Buckeyes a 30–25 halftime lead.
Thornton’s three gave Ohio State the lead and the Buckeyes never looked back. They opened the second half on a 14–3 run, outscored the Mountaineers 45–28 after the break, and led by as many as 28 in the closing minutes.
Thornton finished with 13 points, three assists, three rebounds, two steals, and a block. Sophomore guard John Mobley Jr. (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) added 16 points, going 8-of-9 from the free-throw line and hitting a pair of threes. Senior center Christoph Tilly (Berlin, Germany) tallied nine points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Freshman forward Amare Bynum (Omaha, Neb.) came off the bench and chipped in eight points and two rebounds.
Ohio State won the rebounding battle 39–31, shot 75.0 percent from the free throw line (24-of-32), and forced nine turnovers. After shooting just 28.6 percent in the first half, the Buckeyes hit 53.8 percent of their shots in the second, holding Appalachian State to 35.7 percent overall.
The Mountaineers were led by Kasen Jennings with 12 points. Jalen Tot scored nine, and Andrin Njock added eight.
