Player Notes:
§ #92 Caden Curry leads the Big Ten Conference in sacks (6.0) and is second in TFLs (9.5) and ranks No. 6 and No. 8 nationally, respectively. He is a playmaking, tackling machine with 31 tackles and who was the unanimous defensive player of the week following a five-TFL, three-QB sack game vs. Washington.
§ Kirk Herstreit describing #2 Caleb Downs' play: "This is Troy Polamalu stuff … or Ed Reed." Downs, a unanimous All-American in 2024 for Ohio State, has 28 tackles, two TFLs, an interception and a QB hurry. A team captain, Downs entered the season rated as the No. 2 player in the country by both Pro Football Focus and FOX analyst Joel Klatt.
§ #8 Arvell Reese is an exceptional athlete who has the size of a defensive end and the speed of a linebacker. He leads Ohio State in tackles with 38 and ranks second with 4.5 TFLs and QB sacks. He also has two PBUs and two QB hurries. He is being mentioned as the No. 1 linebacker in the country.
§ #4 Jeremiah Smith entered the season the No. 1 player in the country according to Pro Football Focus and FOX analyst Joel Klatt. He was also No. 1 on Bruce Feldman's "freaks" list. Smith has 40 receptions for 505 yards and is No. 2 nationally with seven TD receptions. He is also Top 10 nationally in receptions, receptions per game and total touchdowns (eight). And talking touchdowns: Smith has scored 24 touchdowns in 22 games. Only four previous Buckeyes – TreVeyon Henderson and three who played in the 1960s (Jim Otis), 1970s (Champ Henson) and 1980s (Keith Byars) – have scored more in their first 22 games than Smith.
§ #0 Sonny Styles is also a team captain who is part of a destructive duo at LB with Reese. Styles is second on the team with 37 tackles and he leads current Buckeyes with 199 career tackles. Styles is not only an outstanding linebacker, but he was honored with the coveted Block "O" jersey for his values of toughness, accountability and the highest of character.
