COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State led for the majority of the game but No. 15 Oregon got hot late and snuck away with a 73-71 victory on Thursday night at Value City Arena.
Junior point guard Bruce Thornton led the Buckeyes (10-6, 2-3) with 20 points and three assists. Freshman guard John Mobley Jr. finished with 16 points, making all five of his free throw attempts.
Sophomore forward Sean Stewart had his best game of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Both totals were season highs. He was also a career-best 6-of-8 from the free throw line and had a pair of steals.
Micah Parrish was 3-of-4 from long range and finished with 11 points and two assists.
Oregon made seven of its final eight shots, which included 4-of-5 from three-point range, in the final seven minutes. That helped the Ducks climb out of a seven-point hole and pull out the victory.
The lead went back and forth early, and then a 13-5 run for Ohio State gave the Buckeyes as much as an 8-point lead late in the opening half. The Buckeyes would go on to lead 32-27 at the break as they limited Oregon to just 29 percent shooting in the first half.
Ohio State still led by eight, 61-53 with six minutes to play, and that's when Oregon got hot from the floor and would finish the game on an 18-10 run. The Ducks took their first lead with 1:35 to play and after an Evan Mahaffey lay-in with 23 seconds left, the Buckeyes got a steal on the inbounds and Mobley Jr. would make a pair of free throws to give Ohio State a 71-70 lead with 12 seconds left. Oregon was fouled on the other end and made a pair of free throws to retake a one-point lead and Thornton's three-pointer in the final moments felt just off the rim.
