LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 12/12 Ohio State women's basketball team (19-1, 8-1 B1G) earned a tough 72-66 win against RV/No. 25 Nebraska (15-5, 6-3 B1G) on Sunday afternoon on the road.
The first quarter was back-and-forth in nature and Nebraska held a 21-17 lead after 10 minutes of play. Ohio State took its first lead of the game in the second quarter but trailed 38-36 heading into halftime. The Buckeyes tied the game to begin the third quarter and used an extended 14-3 run to take a 61-55 lead into the final quarter. The Huskers got as close as one point during the fourth quarter but the Buckeyes scored the final four points to earn the victory.
Taylor Thierry was the first player in the game to reach double figures and totaled a season-high 23 points, which included a career-high five made triples. Cotie McMahon joined Thierry in double figures with 15 points and added 10 rebounds for McMahon's second double-double of the season. Madison Greene added 11 points.
How it Happened
Nebraska opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer and Ajae Petty answered with a move in the paint. Thierry tied the game at five with a triple of her own. The Huskers put together an 8-2 run to take a 13-7 lead with 5:42 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeyes got within two at 15-13 after a pair of free throws from Elsa Lemmilä and Eboni Walker capped the first quarter's scoring with OSU trailing 21-17.
Ohio State tied the game at 21 with back-to-back fastbreak layups to open the second quarter and took its first lead of the game with 7:23 remaining in the second quarter on a free throw from Chance Gray. The Huskers responded with an 8-0 run to take a 29-22 lead with 5:33 to play in the half. OSU scored the next five points and then got within one at 31-30 on a three-pointer from Greene. The Buckeyes headed to the locker room down 38-36 after a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Greene was waived off.
Chance Gray tied the game at 38 to start the second half and the teams traded baskets. The game was tied again at 43 and 45 before McMahon tied the game at 50 with a three-pointer and gave the Buckeyes the lead with a fastbreak layup. Nebraska answered with a three-pointer to regain a 53-52 lead with just under four to play in the third. Ohio State scored the next nine points on the floor to lead by a 61-53 margin before Nebraska wrapped up the quarter's scoring from the charity stripe.
Kennedy Cambridge opened the fourth quarter's scoring with a fastbreak layup. Each team had one more basket before the media timeout as the Buckeyes held the 65-57 lead with 5:44 to play. The Huskers used a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to 65-63 with 2:40 remaining. Thierry ended OSU's scoring drought with a step back three-pointer and the Buckeyes held a 68-66 lead with less than a minute to play. Greene made a pair from the free throw line and Ohio State followed with a defensive stop to earn the 72-66 win.
