No. 2 Ohio State 56, Western Michigan 0
Sept. 7, 2024 - Ohio Stadium; Columbus, Ohio
Attendance: 102,665
Ryan Day, Ohio State head coach
On Quinshon Judkins' performance…
"Yeah, you can see it; strong running, home run hitting ability. I thought he and Trey (Henderson) both ran well today, and we even had the one that called back on Quinshon. I feel like we had a good mix in the game today."
Â
On playing depth…
"We need to get these guys plays, because it's so important down the road, so we try to be respectful, and there's no question about that, but we also have to let our guys learn and make mistakes, because as we know, down the road, we're going to need these guys in the game. The only way to figure it out is to get them into the game."
Â
On his favorite play of the day…
"My favorite part of the whole day was we missed the blitz on a play action pass. A guy came free, he (Will Howard) avoided the sack and then threw the ball away. To me, that was a big play. And those are the things that are going to matter in some of these closer games."
Â
On the defense getting a shutout …
"I could hear the defensive guys talk about it at halftime. There's a mindset there, and our guys are competitive. I think you see that even at the end, they're competing, and that's a good sign. I saw that all summer, and you can feel it on the field. It's something these guys have pride in. To shut someone else out is a good day."
Â
On playing multiple quarterbacks late in the game…
"He (Devin Brown) got a couple of drives, and we felt like we wanted to get Jules (Julian Sayin) in there and Lincoln (Kienholz) as well. Those guys are working, and they deserve an opportunity to play in those types of situations. The more we can do that, the better; we'd love to get more and more reps. When we have this many quarterbacks it's hard to do, but I think this team overall is unselfish, I think that everyone is cheering for each other."
Â
Will Howard, Ohio State quarterback
On the team's talent…
"I think the exciting thing about this team is that we have so much talent. So many guys that are doing so many good things, but we can still build and grow to be an even better team."
Â
On everyone settling in…
"I am so much more comfortable finally settling into a routine. We have so many new people here between the new players and even new coaching staff. Everyone is finally figuring out their own way, which led to a really good week."
Â
On scoring a rushing touchdown…
"It's a great feeling. There is nothing like running in a touchdown. Feeling the crowd and celebrating with your teammates in the endzone - there is no feeling like that."
Â
On Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson …
"They are so interchangeable, it is unbelievable. The really cool thing about those two is there is no ego from those two. They are both very tight and get along very well. Those two embody what this culture is about. They work together and don't care who gets the most rushes or who scores more touchdowns. They are not only fast and quick but are also strong. They will both run around and through guys."
Â
On the offensive line…
"Those guys played outstanding today. They really stepped up and moved guys off the line, which reflected in the run game."
Cody Simon, Ohio State linebackerÂ
On his postgame message to his teammates...
"Every week you have to bring your best, because every team's going to bring their best against us."
On limiting opponent scoring...
"We're always trying to get a shutout game. It hurts when you let up anything. I think it's a great goal for us. We want to dominate. We want to know the end goal in mind."
On the win over Western Michigan...
"I think today was a really good team win and I'm just happy for everybody because we can all enjoy this."
Quinshon Judkins, Ohio State running back
On his friendship with TreVeyon Henderson…
"The moments we have together each day - we cherish those moments. We realize how special this is and how special this team is."
On the team's performance…
"[We are] definitely happy as a whole team. We all played well; still things we can improve on but overall, we played great."
On next steps after games…
"You look at film, you come out and see how you can get better for the next week."
Lance Taylor, Western Michigan head coach
On what was learned from today's game...
"I learned that we didn't have enough consistency from one week to the next. I learned that we weren't able to run the ball or stop the run, which is how our team is built, and when we don't do those two things very well, we play from behind, and we're not a great team from behind."
On if Ohio State is a national championship caliber team...
"Ohio State's a really good football team. They've got playmakers at all three levels, in all three phases and they're really well coached."
On the difference between Ohio State in person and on tape...
"They're bigger and scarier in person."
On comparing playing here to playing at Camp Randall...
"I don't really like comparisons. What I will tell you is this is a really good football team. They're very well coached, and this environment is one of the best that I've ever been in. I've been in some great environments - the fans do an excellent job. You can feel the history and tradition of this place. This is a really cool place to play and they love their Buckeyes."
