COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s tennis will open the collegiate season this upcoming week at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla. The annual event will start on Saturday, Sept. 21 and will run through the following Sunday, Sept. 29.
This event is the first of four qualifying events that lead into the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship in November. The NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved a two-year pilot program to hold the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Individual Championships in the fall of 2024 and 2025. The four qualifying events are the ITA All-American Championships, ITA Regional Championships, ITA Conference Masters and ITA Sectional Championships.
A total of 64 singles qualifiers and 32 doubles teams will advance to the NCAA Championship which will be hosted by Baylor on Nov. 19-24.
- Ohio State will have seven singles players competing as well as three doubles teams.
- Juniors Jack Anthrop and Will Jansen are both in the main draw for singles while sophomore Aidan Kim and junior Alexander Bernard are in qualifying and senior Chris Li and sophomores Preston Stearns and Bryce Nakashima are in pre-qualifying.
- In doubles, Bernard and Kim earned a spot in the main draw while Anthrop and Nakashima are in qualifying, and Jansen and Li are in pre-qualifying.
- Ohio State has had success at the All-American Championships. A Buckeye doubles team has won two of the last three titles as Robert Cash and Matej Vocel won in 2021, and Cash and JJ Tracy won last year. Those are two of four doubles champions to go along with three doubles runner-up finishes. In singles, JJ Wolf won the title in 2018, and Peter Kobelt finished runner-up in 2012.
- This season, the singles and doubles champions at the ITA All-American Championship will earn All-America honors.
- The Buckeyes are coming off another tremendous season, winning the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and making yet another NCAA semifinal appearance. They also won their third ITA Indoor Team National Championship in February.
- For the second consecutive season, an Ohio State doubles team won the NCAA Championship as Cash and Tracy won the title in May, following Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter from 2023.
