COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State national champions Robert Cash and JJ Tracy participated in their first ATP 250 in Newport this week and made a tremendous run all the way to the doubles final.
The Buckeye duo opened their run with a win over the No. 3 seeded team of Diego Hidalgo (ATP 66) and John-Patrick Smith (ATP 60) 6-2, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, they took down the No. 5 seeded team of Evan King and Reese Stalder 7-6(6), 7-5 to reach the semis.
In Friday’s semifinal, the rolled past the duo of Anirudh Chandrasekar and Arjun Kadhe of India in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. They would eventually fall in Sunday’s championship match, but it was a good tune-up week for the former All-Americans.
Thanks to their NCAA doubles championship in May, Cash and Tracy received a wild card from the USTA into next month’s US Open double main draw. They combined to go 20-3 this past season and became the third Buckeye tandem to win an NCAA doubles crown and the second consecutive.
