COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State player and coach Hunter Callahan is making his return to Columbus as an assistant coach with the men’s tennis program. Callahan played for the Buckeyes from 2011-15 and was a volunteer assistant from 2020-22. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Miami.
“It’s exciting to have Hunter return to Ohio State,” director of tennis Ty Tucker said. “He did a great job at Miami and will bring experience and knowledge to the practice court and lineup. Hunter has hit the ground running and is already doing a fantastic job on the court and on the recruiting trail.”
In his two seasons at Miami, Callahan helped the Hurricanes to a record of 26-24 and helped guide Dan Martin to first team All-ACC honors as well as a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship.
“I’m thrilled to be back at Ohio State and I’m really looking forward to this opportunity,” Callahan said. “This program obviously means so much to me. Ty and Justin (Kronauge) have done a tremendous job in building a program that is at the top of collegiate tennis year after year, and I’m excited to help continue that success.”
As a player for the Buckeyes, Callahan was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and combined for 143 wins (84 singles, 59 doubles) in his career. He helped Ohio State win the 2014 ITA National Team Indoor championship and was named to the all-tournament team. Off the court, he was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and an OSU Scholar-Athlete.
After graduating from Ohio State in 2015 with a degree in marketing, Callahan went on to play professionally for three years. While on tour, he won two professional doubles titles and made the semifinals in a pair of singles tournaments.
At the conclusion of his professional career, Callahan joined the men’s tennis program at Duquesne as a volunteer assistant in 2018. Shortly after, he was promoted to assistant coach for the women’s tennis team. He was promoted once again in 2019, becoming the associate head coach for both programs.
In the fall of 2020, Callahan returned to Ohio State as a volunteer assistant coach alongside Tucker and Kronauge. He helped the Buckeyes win a Big Ten regular season title and advance to the final site of the NCAA Tournament. In 2021-22, Callahan started the year by leading four players to an all-Buckeye final at the ITA All-American Championship and ended the year with another Big Ten title and a semifinal appearance at the NCAA Championship.
