Buckeye football is one of only two D1 football programs with perfect multi-year score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate data shows Ohio State and its student-athletes and athletic programs continue to have outstanding success in the classroom.
Â
In the 20th year of APR data for most teams, the scores provide a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
Â
Ohio State posted a cross-sport multi-year rate of 989. Of the 31 Buckeye sport programs in the data, nine have a multi-year score of 1,000, with another 15 posting a score of at least 990. Ohio State football is one of just two Division I football programs with a score of 1,000. The 2022-23 single-year rate for Ohio State as a department was 989.Â
Â
Dr. John Davidson, Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative, is impressed by the success of the Ohio State student-athletes, coaches and staff.
Â
"Buckeye student-athletes and athletic programs have again done us proud in their academic work," Davidson said. "After posting a record Graduate Success Rate (GSR) in Autumn 2023, the most recent APR data shows that, despite an increasingly complex transfer landscape, our retention and eligibility numbers are extremely strong and every program is well positioned for the future."
Â
In all, nine programs had perfect multi-year scores, with men's and women's cross country, men's fencing, field hockey, men's and women's golf, women's soccer and women's volleyball joining football.
Â
"Obviously, the perfect score by our football program is eye-popping," Davidson said. "It leads the Big Ten and is matched only by Harvard across the entire nation. Beyond that, though, the concern with academics that undergirds our athletics department's culture is evident across the board: three-quarters of our programs sit at 990 or above. This reflects the attention paid to success in school not just by students and academic counselors but by coaches in their recruiting and their mentoring."
Â
In the single-year results for 2022-23, 18 Ohio State programs had perfect scores: men's and women's cross country, men's and women's fencing, field hockey, football, men's and women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, rifle, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, women's volleyball and wrestling.
Â
This academic year, 227 Buckeyes have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team, with spring and at-large sports honors to be awarded later this month, and 811 were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes. At autumn commencement, 56 current and former student-athletes received their degrees and 203 received their degrees at spring commencement.
