Former Buckeyes Win Inaugural PWHL Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women's hockey alumnae Clair DeGeorge, Sophie Jaques and Liz Schepers won the Professional Women's Hockey League's inaugural championship, hoisting the Walter Cup with PWHL Minnesota. Minnesota defeated Boston, 3-0, in the winner-take-all game Wednesday night.

Schepers, who captained the Buckeyes to their first national championship in 2022, scored the game-winning goal for Minnesota on Wednesday. The goal was her first career PWHL goal.

Jaques gave Minnesota a taste of the championship feeling, appearing to score in double overtime in game four on Sunday. The goal was eventually called back for goaltender interference. But she finished tied with Schepers for third in playoff points with five.

Ohio State saw eight players rostered in the PWHL's inaugural season, with seven of those skaters developed under Buckeye head coach Nadine Muzerall. Also making the league playoffs were Natalie Spooner ('12) and Emma Maltais ('23) with Toronto and Madison Bizal ('23) with Montreal. Jincy (Dunne) Roese ('20) was captain for Ottawa and Paetyn Levis ('23) skated for New York.

The 2024 PWHL Draft will take place Monday, June 10 at 7 p.m. ET in St. Paul, Minn. Nine Ohio State players have entered their names in the draft.
