Damien Carfagna was brought into the hockey world by his father at age four and never turned back. Though he is from a suburb of New Jersey, he grew up as a Philadelphia Flyers fan. His favorite player, however, was Erik Karlsson, a defenseman who played for the Senators and Sharks before moving to play for the Penguins in 2023-24.
During his childhood, Carfagna also played baseball and soccer alongside hockey until he was 12. He thoroughly enjoyed his time playing hockey during his youth and explained, "It was originally something I did to stay active and get away from school, but I ended up just falling in love with it."
For youth hockey, Carfagna played for the New Jersey Colonials and Mercer Chiefs AAA teams for a few years each. In high school, he played for Don Bosco Prep, a private school in New Jersey, and Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts. Carfagna then began playing in the USHL for the Green Bay Gamblers, where he spent one and a half seasons before finishing his time in the USHL with the Sioux City Musketeers.
Unlike typical high schoolers Carfagna, had to travel frequently for hockey and move around to play hockey at elite levels. Though it was difficult for him to move so often, he shared that he believes it impacted him positively overall.
He said, "It got me used to traveling a lot and I think traveling is a big part life, to go out and see other places and different cultures."
Carfagna attended the University of New Hampshire for his freshman year of college before entering the transfer portal and coming to Ohio State. He shared that when he entered the portal, he received a call from Ohio State and once he visited the campus - "It was a no brainer."
Alongside hockey, Carfagna is majoring in sport industry. He explained that it isn't always easy to balance his schoolwork with hockey during the season.
"The biggest thing is time management and being able to keep everything balanced," he said.
During the off-season, Carfagna enjoys going to the beach in New Jersey with his friends and hanging out with his family. He also enjoys playing baseball and spending time with his dog. A fun fact about him is that he can play guitar and likes to do that whenever he can.
Carfagna currently wears number 93 after his uncle, who wore the same number. Carfagna has much more to him than just hockey, such as playing guitar and being with his dog. He also enjoys hanging out with his friends, just like any college student does. He loved his first season at Ohio State and is excited to see what else is to come.
