Two of the inaugural cohort have already earned full-time roles in athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Now beginning just its second year, the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute's impact of the NextGen program in Ohio State Athletics has been immediate.
Â
NextGen is a full-time structured rotational development program for graduating student-athletes. The program is designed to provide experience and skill development necessary to succeed in a career within intercollegiate athletics.
Â
The new NextGen cohort has been selected, with the group of seven beginning this summer. The class includes Nina Andrianos (dance), Emily Armstrong (synchronized swimming), Hannah Bach (women's swimming and diving), Ali Gordon (field hockey), Alexis Hankins (women's gymnastics), Delaney Lawler (field hockey) and Andrew Moore (football). They will begin their first rotation in athletics on July 1st.
Â
Developed as a two-year rotational program, two of the seven members of the first cohort have already transitioned to full-time staff members with Ohio State Athletics and Business Advancement. Ashley Turner, a member of the women's lacrosse team, worked with event management and special events and is now a coordinator with Scarlet and Gray Venues, managing special events. Marcus Ernst, who was part of the Buckeye baseball team, participated in rotations with the business and development offices in the NextGen program and has now moved into a position as a donor experience officer in development.Â
Â
Ernst and Turner are grateful for their time in NextGen and the impact it provided on their professional careers.
"The NextGen program provided me with more insight and clarity than I could have ever imagined," Ernst said. "I entered the program unclear of what I wanted to do within athletics. The combination of work experience and conversations with various employees gave me a much better understanding of what I wanted my college athletics career to look like."
Â
Turner expressed her gratitude for NextGen as it prepared her to take on a new role.
"I am very honored and excited for this continued opportunity to work with our Scarlet & Gray Venues team and continue to progress in my career development," Turner said. "The camaraderie and collaboration Ohio State Athletics has is one of a kind and I am honored to be a part of that culture."
Â
The innovative program has seen success thanks to the department's commitment to preparing student-athletes for life after sport.
"Employees of the athletics department want to see the student-athletes succeed and they are more than willing to help you in as many ways as possible," Ernst said.
Â
With the first cohort already making an impact across the department, it will be exciting to see how the next class of NextGen Buckeyes contributes to the industry in meaningful ways.
