No. 12 Buckeyes Fall to No. 2 Wolverines in B1G Tournament Final

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ohio State women's tennis team fell to No. 2 Michigan, 4-2, in the final of the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., Sunday. The teams were facing off in the conference tournament championship match for the fourth year in a row.

Ohio State, the No. 2 seed, is No. 19-7 on the year and had its 12-match winning streak end. The No. 1 seed Wolverines improved to 26-3. In the final, Michigan opened with the doubles point. Buckeye freshman Luciana Perry tied the match with a straight-set win but the Wolverines took the next two for a 3-1 advantage. Shelly Bereznyak notched a win for the Buckeyes for a 3-2 team match. The Wolverines prevailed on court three to clinch the team victory and tournament title.

Perry and Irina Cantos Siemers were both named to the all-tournament team. Perry was 3-0 in singles, with Cantos 2-0 in singles, and the tandem combined for a 3-0 mark in doubles.

The Schedule Ahead
- The NCAA selection show will air on NCAA.com at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
- The Top 16 seeds will host first and second round matches May 3-4 or 4-5 on campus sites, with eight sites hosting super regionals May 10 or 11. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be in Stillwater, Okla., May 17-19.
- The singles and doubles championships will be in Stillwater May 20-25.
- Michigan opened doubles with a 6-1 win on court two.
- On court one, the Buckeyes' No. 31-ranked tandem of Irina Cantos Siemers and Luciana Perry jumped out to a 4-1 lead and defeated the Wolverines' No. 8-ranked duo of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller, 6-2.
- On court three, Buckeyes Madeline Atway and Teah Chavez were down 4-1 but battled back to 4-5. Michigan's Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones held to clinch the match, 6-4, and the doubles point for the Wolverines.
- Perry continued her outstanding play, as she topped Gala Mesochoritou, 7-5, 6-3, on court two to tie the team score at one. The Buckeye freshman won the final four games to take the first set and ended the second set with wins in the last five games.
- The court six match went to a third set but ended second. Michigan's Piper Charney won the first set, 6-1, but Buckeye freshman Audrey Spencer rallied with a 6-2 win in set two. In the third, Charney won 6-3 to clinch the match and put the Wolverines in the lead.
- Michigan's Lily Jones followed, as she was a 7-5, 6-3 winner against Chavez on court five.
- Buckeye Shelly Bereznyak downed Brown on court four. Bereznyak opened the match with a 4-1 lead en route to a 6-4 win in the first set. In the second set, the Buckeye was again up a break early and went on to win, 6-3.
- Two matches remained, with the Buckeyes needing both for the team victory.
- The Wolverines' Fliegner clinched the team win, as she downed Sydni Ratliff, 7-6 (4), 7-5, winning the final three games for the victory.
- The match on court one between Buckeye Cantos Siemers and Miller was abandoned. Miller won the first set, 6-4. The Buckeye fought off two match points for five-all in the second set. Miller broke in the next game for a 6-5 lead, but Cantos Siemers again battled and the match was abandoned with Miller about to serve on the no-ad point.
