COLUMBUS, Ohio --Â The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the Ohio State women's tennis team is the 2024 ITA Division I Women's National Team Indoor Championship Sportsmanship Award winner.
Awarded each year following the conclusion of the ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships, the ITA Team Sportsmanship Award is presented to the men's and women's teams that display exceptional sportsmanship, character, and ethical conduct throughout the national championship. Virginia was the recipient of the men's award.Â
At the championships, it was the Ohio State Buckeyes that not only showcased an exceptional level of tennis on the court but an exceptional level of sportsmanship as well. Making the quarterfinals of the tournament, the Buckeyes battled in every single match, but never let the moment sway their respect for the opponent.
"I am really proud and thankful for our team this year," Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said "Winning the Sportsmanship Award at this level is something I know everyone in our locker room will be so happy about. When you are at the National Indoors you are there to compete against the best teams in the country. I think you can compete your absolute hardest every time that you step on the court while also understanding you are representing something bigger than yourself. We are always trying to represent our team, Ohio State, and college tennis the best we can. College tennis is amazing in so many ways and I feel lucky to get to coach a great group of student-athletes."
The two teams were praised not only by officials but also by opposing players and coaches alike for their great representation of the sport during the tournament.
