Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Here are this week's Buckeye Spotlight student-athletes:
Jack Anthrop | Men's Tennis | So. | Orlando, Fla.
- Anthrop went a combined 3-1 in a pair of road matches last week.
- He won both of his singles matches at the No. 4 position, posting one of only two singles wins in the match at No. 12 Texas
- He also won his doubles match against Illinois, giving him nine doubles wins on the year.
- For the season, Anthrop is a perfect 12-0 in dual singles matches and a team-best 24-3 overall
Tegan Cortelletti | Softball | Gr. | Hilliard, Ohio
- Cortelletti hit .533 last weekend in five games at the Tennessee Invitational with a team-high eight hits.
- In a 6-3 win over South Dakota on Friday, she went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.
- Cortelletti was also a threat on the base paths, stealing four bases in four attempts.
- A graduate student, Cortelletti currently leads the team in batting average (.432), hits (19) and stolen bases (five) while also adding eight RBI.
- Ohio State (11-6) continues its spring break trip with a pair of midweek games on Tuesday (at Belmont) and Wednesday (at Austin Peay).
Jesse Mendez | Wrestling | So. | Crown Point, Ind.
- Won his first Big Ten Championship with a 4-1 victory over No. 1 seed Beau Bartlett of Penn State
- Became Ohio State's 58th individual Big Ten Champion
- Improved 2023-24 record to 25-2 after going 3-0 in 141 bracket
- Helped Ohio State finish 5th at league championships
- Qualified for second NCAA Championships
Edriss Ndiaye | Men's Fencing | Sr. | Rockville, Md.
- Ndiaye was the gold medalist in men's foil at the NCAA Midwest Regionals Saturday in Detroit.
- The conference champion this year, he was a perfect 9-0 at the regional to capture the title. It was his third Top 5 finish at regionals and he looks to become a three-time NCAA qualifier when the selections are announced this week.
- Ndiaye was one of four Buckeyes to finish among the Top 3 at the regional, joined by silver medalists Alina Lee (women's foil) and Luca Fioretto (men's saber) and bronze medalist Paul Veltrup (epee). In all, 13 Buckeyes claimed Top 5 spots.
- Ohio State will serve as host of the 2024 NCAA Championships, set for March 21-24 in French Field House and St. John Arena.
Jesse Pakele | Men's Gymnastics | So. | Salt Lake, Hawaii
- Sophomore Jesse Pakele put together the best meet of his collegiate career on Saturday in the Buckeyes' dual meet win over the Wolverines.
- Pakele recorded three career-highs in three events he competed in and helped the Buckeyes to their best team score of the season on both floor and pommel horse.
- He earned his first 14 of his collegiate career on floor by scoring a 14.250 to start the meet. Pakele served as OSU's pommel horse anchor (13.950) and also competed on rings (13.250).
Kyle Teune | Men's Volleyball | Jr. | Downers Grove, Ill.
- Started twice in matches in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge against No. 12 USC and No. 4 UCLA
- Hit .457 with 21 kills in a 3-1 win over the Trojans and a loss to the Bruins
- Also added two assists and an ace
- Led the Buckeyes with 11 digs while contributing two blocks
- Ohio State returns to league action vs. No. 13 Ball State Thursday (7 p.m.) at the Covelli Center
Logan Terness | Men's Hockey | Jr. | North Vancouver, British Columbia
- Terness backstopped the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series win at No. 5/6 Wisconsin, the No. 2 seed, last weekend.
- The junior allowed just two goals, one each night, as Ohio State posted 3-1 victories in games one and three to advance to the semifinals. He had 28 saves Friday and stopped 29 Sunday.
- The game three victory that clinched the Buckeyes' spot in the semifinals was the 1,000 win in program history.
- Terness and the Buckeyes will now travel to East Lansing to take on top seed Michigan State in a single-elimination semifinal game Saturday. Puck drops at 6:30 p.m. on BTN and Ohio State Radio.
