COLUMBUS, Ohio – What a way to cap an emotional week, as Ohio State took down No. 2 Purdue 73-69 on Sunday at Value City Arena.
Â
The win improves the Buckeyes to 5-10 in the Big Ten play and 15-11 overall on the season.
Â
Sophomore Bruce Thornton led the Buckeyes in scoring with 22 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists, surpassing 200 for his college career. Jamison Battle scored 19 points, all in the second half, on 6-of-8 shooting with three three-pointers.
Â
Zed Key battled Zach Edey inside and finished with nine points and a career-high five steals.
Â
Edey led Purdue with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Â
The Buckeyes found themselves down early as Purdue got out to an 8-0 start just three minutes into the game. Thornton would score eight points to cut the lead to four by the first timeout. Ohio State forced three turnovers in the next four minutes but still trailed 16-12 by the mid-point of the half.
Â
Six-straight points, including Gayle Jr.'s game-tying dunk, would see the game even at 16 for the first time. The Buckeyes used Purdue foul trouble to their advantage and ended the half on a 14-2 scoring run from the 5:27 mark, forcing two huge turnovers and hitting five-consecutive shots in a row to take a 35-30 edge at the break.
Â
The Buckeyes came out firing in the second half with Battle knocking down three-straight three-pointers to lead an 11-0 OSU run to put the Buckeyes in front 50-38 lead. Purdue would chip away at the lead slowly and trailed by seven at the under eight timeout, knocking down their free throws to stay in the game. Purdue would hit all 20 of their foul shots on the afternoon.
Â
The Buckeyes led from the 2:28 mark of the first half until Purdue tied it with a three-pointer at the 1:35 mark of the second half. A big Battle pull-up jumper would Ohio State the lead again and after Zed Key's strip steal on Zach Edey, Battle would seal the win for Ohio State at the foul line.
Â
The Buckeyes forced 14 Purdue turnovers with nine steals and scored 22 points off of those turnovers.
Â
Ohio State hits the road next week for a pair of games, starting on Thursday night at Minnesota.
