
Mendez Earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Jesse Mendez was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after a 3-0 record at the 2024 Collegiate Duals in Nashville last Saturday.Â
Mendez, the defending Big Ten and National Champion at 141 pounds, improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in dual competitions after the Buckeyes downed No. 21 North Carolina, Lock Haven and No. 14 Iowa State.Â
Against the Tar Heels, Mendez, ranked No. 2 nationally, shutout Jayden Scott for a 5-0 win by decision. He then defeated No. 23 Wyatt Henson of Lock Haven by technical fall, 17-2.Â
In the final dual of the event, Mendez pinned No. 19 Jacob Frost of Iowa State at the 1:26 mark of the opening period for his third win of the day.Â
The Buckeyes completed the 2024 portion of the schedule with a 7-0 record. The 2025 half of the schedule gets underway at 1 p.m. Jan. 5 against Oregon State at the Covelli Center in Columbus.Â
