COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeyes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes Buckeye student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Gunnarwolfe Fontaine | Men's Hockey | Gr. | East Greenwich, R.I.
- Fontaine helped the No. 14 Buckeyes to a sweep of Notre Dame last weekend, as the squad wrapped up the first half on a four-game winning streak and 13-4-1 overall.
- In a 2-1 overtime win Friday, he had the primary assist on both Buckeye goals. Saturday, Fontaine tallied a late power play insurance goal en route to a 3-1 Buckeye win.
- Fontaine leads the Buckeyes with 18 points and is tied for second on the team with seven goals. He is on a four-game scoring streak (3g, 3a, 6p).
Thomas Gilej | Men's Soccer | R-Sr. | Wuppertal, Germany
- Played 75 minutes in College Cup Semifinal vs. Marshall
- Helped defense hold Thundering Herd to just eight shots in 1-0 loss
- Buckeyes allowed just 19 goals during record-setting 16-2-4 campaign
- Team recorded 10 shutouts this season, including three in postseason
Tristan Jankovics | Men's Swimming & Diving | Jr. | Guelph, Ont.
- Jankovics turned in two individual top 10 finishes at the World Aquatics Championships last week in Budapest, Hungary.
- He set a Canadian short-course record twice in the 400 IM, first in prelims placing third with a time of 4:02.01. He broke the record again in finals, finishing sixth with a time of 4:00.57. The previous record of 4:02.72 was set 21 years ago.
- Jankovics placed 10th in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:53.81.
- He helped the Canadian 4x200 free relay team to an eighth-place finish in prelims with a time of 6:57.78; they scratched for finals.
- Jankovics and Team Canada placed 12th in 4x100 free relay with a time of 3:10.70.
Brendan McCrone | Wrestling | R-So. | Willoughby, Ohio
- Started a rally at 125 with 8-0 major decision win after Buckeyes trailed 14-0 at Pittsburgh
- Ohio State scored next 20 team points in 20-17 road victory
- McCrone improved to 13-2 on the year and 4-0 in dual competitions
- Entered match ranked No. 6 nationally at 125
- Buckeyes face North Carolina, Lock Haven and Iowa State Saturday at Collegiate Duals in Nashville
Taylor Thierry | Women's Basketball | Sr. | Cleveland, Ohio
- Senior guard/forward Taylor Thierry had the unique opportunity to play against her twin sister, Haley, on Saturday as the Buckeyes hosted Youngstown State.
- This was the first time in their lives they were on opposite teams and while they'd much rather be on the same team, both were all smiles as they shared the court, subbed in at the same time and even spent some time guarding each other. The Thierry sisters had 15 family members in attendance from across the country, including their mother, Elin.
- Taylor Thierry recorded nine points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven steals in Saturday's game, also tallying a block on one of Haley's shots. Haley played more than 16 minutes off the bench and finished with two points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Kiara Zanon | Women's Hockey | Gr. | Fairport, N.Y.
- Zanon helped USA Hockey to the Women's Euro Hockey Tour championship last weekend in Tampere, Finland.
- The graduate student tallied four points in four games for Team USA.
- She earned player of the game honors in the 6-2 win over Switzerland, scoring twice on the power play.
- In all, 11 current Buckeyes competed at the Six Nations Tournament and six players – Zanon, Joy Dunne, Emma Peschel, Sloane Matthews and Amanda Thiele – were on the United States' championship-winning team.
