Davino Earns B1G Freshman of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio --Â Ohio State freshman Ben Davino won his first collegiate event with a 5-0 record and wins over a pair of 2024 NCAA qualifiers to earn the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced Thursday.
Davino, a native of Elgin, Illinois, defeated Max Leete of American in a second match at the Clarion Open last Sunday by major decision, 14-3. Leete qualified for the NCAA championships last year. After two more bonus-point wins, Davino edged teammate Nic Bouzakis, who also qualified for the 2024 NCAA Championships, by the score of 5-3 in the title bout.
In all, Davino won his first four bouts as a Buckeye by bonus points (3 MD, 1 TF) on his way to the 133-pound title at Clarion.
No. 6 Ohio State opens the 2024-25 dual season Nov. 14 at the Covelli Center in Columbus against the University of Tennessee at Chattannoga. Match time is set for 7 p.m. with B1G+ set to stream the match live. The 2015 Ohio State NCAA Championship team will be honored at intermission.Â
