COLUMBUS, Ohio – A season that featured a number of individual records has come to an end as No. 10 Ohio State falls to No. 3 Wake Forest 1-0 in the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday.
After surrendering a goal in the 76th minute, the Buckeyes pushed for the equalizer in the final moments and created a pair of tremendous opportunities off corner kicks. But they weren’t able to find the net as Wake Forest held on.
This was the final game for superstar forward Kailyn Dudukovich who finishes her career as the program’s all-time leader in goals scored with 44 as well as points scored with 98.
Sophomore forward Amanda Schlueter had a goal and an assist in the win over Auburn on Friday and finished the season with a single-season record of 12 assists.
This was the fifth time in program history in which the Buckeyes advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. This was also the seventh time OSU registered 14 or more wins in a season as the Buckeyes finished 14-6-3.
After opening the year with a win over Duke, the Buckeyes jumped into the rankings and spent the rest of the season in the Top 25, the longest single-season stretch in program history.
How it Happened
Both teams went scoreless after a back and forth first half battle. Goalkeeper Molly Pritchard made multiple saves to keep the Demon Deacons off the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Buckeye defense held strong until forward Emily Murphy was able to slip a shot between two defenders and just past the diving Pritchard for the lone goal of the game.
The Buckeyes generated two corner kicks in the final minutes, and one resulted in a thumping shot from Dudukovich. It was poked over the bar by the Demon Deacon keeper at the last moment. On the ensuing corner, the ball got past the keeper, but the Buckeyes weren’t able to get a foot on the ball and into the wide-open net.
