No. 1 Ohio State Earns Big Ten Tournament Title with 1-0 Win Over Michigan

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 1 seed Ohio State (14-1-3) defeated No. 7 Michigan (8-3-7) for the 2024 Big Ten Tournament title Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The Buckeyes got a second half goal from senior Parker Grinstead and the Ohio State defense shut out the Wolverines to secure the fourth league tournament title in program history. Â

Max Trejo was in goal for the Buckeyes and improved his season record to 8-0-1 with his fifth shutout of the year.

The attendance of 8,938 set an Ohio State record at JOMS. The previous best home crowd was 7,255 against No. 4 Akron Sept. 28, 2011.

In the conference tournament, Ohio State now owns four league tournament championships (2000-07-09-24). The last time Ohio State played host to the conference tournament championship match was in 2015 when the No. 1 seed Buckeyes fell to No. 3 Maryland, 2-0. Â

The Buckeyes, ranked No. 1 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, will learn their 2024 NCAA Tournament opponent during the selection show Monday. The 48-team field will be announced at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Ohio State last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2022. The Buckeyes won at Wake Forest (3-0) before UNC Greensboro advanced on PKs (6-5) after a double-overtime 1-all draw in the second round.

The Buckeyes have 11 previous NCAA Tournament appearances with an overall record of 8-10-4. The win over the Wolverines earned the Buckeyes the Big Ten's automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA Championships.

Ohio State has played nine matches at home in NCAA Tournament competition all-time (5-2-2). The last home NCAA match was against Dayton in 2015. The Buckeyes advanced 4-3 on PKs after a double-overtime 1-all draw.

How it Happened
Neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes in a defensive battle.

Parker Grinstead put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the 73' when he took control of a headed ball by Michigan on an Ohio State corner kick and scored through traffic. He has six goals this season, including two in the semifinals that helped send the Buckeyes to the title match against the Wolverines.

Grinstead was named the 2024 Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player following the match. Â

He was joined on the All-Tournament team by seniors Siggi Magnusson and Anthony Samways along with junior keeper Max Trejo.
