
Big Second Half Propels Buckeyes to 35-7 Win Over Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0) scored touchdowns on its first four possessions of the second half to take command in a 35-7 win over Iowa (3-2, 1-1) Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Will Howard threw for 209 yards and four touchdowns while completing 21-of-25 passes. He also rushed for a score. Receiver Emeka Egbuka caught nine Howard offerings for 71 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Jeremiah Smith had four catches for 89 yards and one score. TreVeyon Henderson carried 11 times for 61 yards while running mate Quinshon Judkins added 13 carries for 78 yards. Sonny Styles led with seven tackles and four tackles for loss to lead the defense. The Buckeyes take to the road next Saturday to take on Oregon (5-0, 2-0) in Eugene. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. with NBC providing the national broadcast.



First Quarter
No. 3 Ohio State 7 vs. Iowa 0
Ohio State won the pregame coin toss and deferred to the second half. Iowa elected to receive with the Buckeyes defending the north endzone to open the game. The Hawkeyes started at their 25 after a touchback. Iowa drove to the Hawkeyes 41 before punting. Ohio State took over at their 12 after a 47-yard kick. TreVeyon Henderson got the call on Ohio State’s first play from scrimmage, a 4-yard rush up the middle. After a pass from Will Howard to Emeka Egbuka for a gain of 5, Henderson carried again for a 12-yard gain to the OSU 33. Howard, on third down, found Bryson Howard for a gain of 8 to the OSU43 and a first down. Quinshon Judkins then carried for a gain of 5 before a completion to Will Kacmarek for 12 yards to the Iowa 40. Judkins rushed for 7 and Egbuka added a catch for 7 more to the Iowa 26. A few plays later, Howard found Egbuka for a 14-yard touchdown grab just across the goal line in the left corner for a 7-0 Ohio State lead. The drive covered 88 yards on 14 plays while eating up seven minutes, 36 seconds. Iowa again started from its 25 after a touchback. The Hawkeyes moved to the Iowa 49 aided by a 22-yard pass play from Cade McNamara to Jacob Gill. The quarter ended after the Hawkeyes got a first down on a short pass play to the OSU 40.



Second Quarter
No. 3 Ohio State 7 vs. Iowa 0
Iowa moved to the Ohio State 33 before attempting a 51-yard field goal the missed left to keep it 7-0 Buckeyes. Ohio State took over at its 33 and quickly moved to Iowa territory before being stopped on fourth-and-2 at the Iowa 42. The Hawkeyes took over on downs after Howard was stopped short of a first down at the Iowa 41. The Hawkeyes moved to the 50 and on fourth-and-1 after a timeout elected to punt. Ohio State took over in favorable field position after a 22-yard kick out of bounds to the OSU 28. Judkins then carried for 21 yards on Ohio State’s first play to the OSU 49. After a Howard completion to Jeremiah Smith for 23 yards to the Iowa 33, Smith fumbled. The ball was recovered by Iowa’s Jay Higgins at the Hawkeye 28. Iowa had to punt again after the offense stalled at the OSU 49. The Buckeyes took over at their 20 after a 49-yard kick and touchback. Judkins carried on second down for 13 yards before a completion to Smith for 14 to the OSU47. After a 2-yard loss, Howard carried for 12 yards to the Iowa 43 and a first down before the two-minute timeout. The drive stalled at the Iowa 41 and Joe McQuire came in to punt. He delivered a 34-yard kick to the Iowa 7. Ohio State’s defense did not allow a first down, forcing the Hawkeyes to punt from their 9. The Buckeyes, with 1:13 on the clock, took over at their 45 after a 46-yard kick. Iowa got the ball back two plays later on an interception by Sebastian Castro at the Iowa 38. JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer sacked McNamara for a loss of 5 to the Iowa33. The Hawkeyes then ran out the clock to end the half.



Third Quarter
No. 3 Ohio State 28 vs. Iowa 0
The Buckeyes got the ball to start the quarter after a 14-yard Brandon Innis kickoff return to the OSU 14. Howard then directed the offense to the OSU 48 before delivering a 53-yard pass to Smith to the Iowa 4. Smith then finished the drive with a one-handed catch in the back left of the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown grab and a 14-0 Ohio State lead. The drive covered 86 yards on nine plays over 5:17. After Iowa returned the ensuing kickoff to its 19, the Hawkeyes fumbled on their first play from scrimmage after McNamara was sacked by Sawyer and fumbled. Cody Simon recovered for the Buckeyes at the Iowa19. After Henderson carried twice to the Iowa 4, Howard scored on a keeper to the left corner for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead. Iowa got its offensive going on its next possession driving to the OSU 36 after a 28-yard rush by Kaleb Johnson. Tight end Luke Lachey then caught a pass for 13 yards to the OSU24. Ohio State’s Davison Igbinosun then intercepted McNamara at the OSU15 and returned it 45 yards to the Iowa 40. Howard then guided the Buckeyes to the Iowa 11 after Inniss caught a Howard offering over the middle on fourth down from the Iowa32 for 21 yards. Two plays later, Howard hit Egbuka for a 15-yard touchdown pass in the left front corner of the endzone to make it 28-0 Buckeyes. The third score of the quarter covered 40 yards on six plays. After a touchback, Iowa gained 4 yards on a rush to the Hawkeye 29 to end the quarter.



Fourth Quarter
No. 3 Ohio State 35 vs. Iowa 7
Iowa fumbled on the first play of the quarter when McNamara was sacked by Ty Hamilton. The ball was recovered by Kenyatta Jackson Jr. at the Iowa 27. Henderson then carried on the next five plays to the Iowa 4. Howard then rushed for a gain of 1 up the middle. After an Ohio State time, Howard connected with Egbuka again in the back left corner of the endzone for a 3-yard score and a 35-0 lead. Brendan Sullivan took over at quarterback for the Hawkeyes. He carried for 30 yards and then found Lachey for gains of 12 and 5 yards to the OSU30. After a false start and a gain of 7 by Kaleb Johnson, Johnson then rushed up the middle for a 28 yards score to make it 35-7 Buckeyes. Iowa got the ball back after Ohio State was forced to punt on its next possession. A 43-yard McQuire punt was returned 15 yards to the Iowa 38 by Kaden Wetjen. The Hawkeyes punted it right back to the Buckeyes on their next possession. The Buckeyes took over at their 10 after a 3-yard Inniss return. With Devin Brown in at quarterback for the Buckeyes, Ohio State stayed with the rush game to run out the clock.
