
Buckeyes Drop Road Game at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore point guard Bruce Thornton scored a team-high 18 points but Northwestern shot its way out to a lead, and rode it to an 83-59 victory on Saturday in Evanston.
The Buckeyes are now 13-7 on the season and 3-6 in Big Ten play while Northwestern improves to 15-5 and 6-3.
Thornton was 11-of-12 from the free throw line on the night. As a team, the Buckeyes attempted a season-high 33 free throws. Roddy Gayle Jr. was the other Buckeye in double figures with 15 points as he was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Boo Buie led six Wildcats in double digits with 19 points and five assists, despite fouling out.
Ohio State shot just 34 percent from the field (14-of-41) while Northwestern enjoyed the home rims, hitting 57.7 percent for the game and 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from long range.
Northwestern shot 54 percent in the first half and was 7-of-13 from long range to build a 41-30 lead at halftime. Gayle Jr. and Thornton each had nine points in the opening half.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half and then used a 20-1 run to put the game away.
The Buckeyes will return home to host No. 11 Illinois on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed on Peacock.
