No. 6 Buckeyes Open B1G Competition with 36-6 win over Illini

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 6 Ohio State (9-1, 1-0) opened Big Ten Conference action in convincing fashion Friday with a 36-6 win over No. 25 Illinois (3-4, 0-1) Friday at the Covelli Center. 
Luke Geog got the Buckeyes off to a 5-0 lead in the opening bout at 197. Geog downed Illinois' Peter Marinopoulos by technical fall, 18-2. Nick Feldman than won in similar fashion with a 17-2 win. 
The Buckeyes went up 16-0 when Brendan McCrone got the early pin in the 125-pound match.

197 No. 23 Luke Geog (OSU) def. Peter Marinopoulos (ILL) | TF, 18-2
Geog got the match started with a quick pair of takedowns for a 6-1 lead. He added a four-point nearfall followed by a two-point nearfall for a 12-1 advantage. After another takedown, Geog went to the second period with a 15-2 lead. After a quick takedown, Geog won by technical fall, 19-2.

HWT No. 18 Nick Feldman (OSU) def. Sungyup Ryu (ILL) | TF, 17-2
Feldman scored first with a late takedown to lead 3-0 after three minutes. With a point for stalling, an escape and a takedown, Feldman took an 8-0 lead early in the second. Ryu was called for stalling a third time for another two points. Feldman then added a couple takedowns for an 18-2 win by technical fall.Â

125 No. 22 Brendan McCrone (OSU) def. Justin Cardani (ILL) | F, 1:23
 McCrone wasted little time getting a takedown and then the win by pin at 1:23 for six team points for the Buckeyes.Â
133 No. 12 Nic Bouzakis (OSU) def. Tony Madrigal (ILL) | D, 9-4
Bouzakis earned the first points of the bout with a takedown. Bouzakis added another to lead 6-2 after three minutes. With two points for a reversal and a Madrigal escape put the Buckeyes up 8-3. That score held into the third before a Madrigal escape made it 8-4 Bouzakis. With a point for riding time, Bouzakis took the bout with a win by decision, 9-4.
141 No. 3 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. No. 25 Danny Pucino (ILL) | MD, 12-2
With a pair of takedowns in the first along with a stalling point, Mendez led 7-2 after three minutes. An escape and takedown put Mendez up 11-2 after the second. With a point for riding time, Mendez won by major decision, 12-2.
149 No. 10 Kannon Webster (ILL) def. No. 5 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) | D, 4-1
After the break, the opening period of the 149 pound bout went scoreless. D'Emilio scored first with an escape to open the second for a 1-0 lead. Webster got a takedown near the end of the second to lead 3-1 after five minutes. Webster added an escape in the in the third to earn the win by decision, 4-1
157 No. 17 Isaac Wilcox* (OSU) def. Joe Roberts (ILL) | D, 4-3
 Wilcox, moving down to 157 for the remainder of the season from 165, scored first with a takedown. He led 4-1 after an escape to open the second. Wilcox led 4-1 early in the third before a Roberts escape made it 4-2 Buckeyes. Wilcox held on to win by decision, 4-3.
165 Bryce Hepner (OSU) def. No. 25 Chris Moore (ILL) | F, 4:00
Hepner scored first with a takedown for a 3-1 lead after the first. He added two points with a reversal to open the second for a 5-1 lead. Hepner then got the pin at the four minute mark.Â
174 No. 3 Edmond Ruth (ILL) def. Rocco Welsh (OSU) | D, 2-1
There was no score at the end of the first. Welsh chose bottom to open the second and got the escape point 90 seconds into the period for a 1-0 lead after five minutes. Ruth quickly escaped to open the third t tie it at 1-all. With a point for riding time, Ruth earned the win by decision, 2-1. Â
184 Seth Shumate (OSU) def. Caden Ernd (ILL) | MD, 14-2
Shumate lead 6-1 after the first and then improved the lead to 10-1 in the second with an escape and a takedown. Ernd escaped early in the third before a Shumate takedown made it 13-2. With a point or riding time, Shumate got the win by major decision, 14-2.
