Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Kevin Agnew | Men's Cross Country | Jr. | Bellbrook, Ohio | Archbishop Carroll High School
- Agnew led the Buckeye men at the Badger Classic Saturday, finishing sixth overall, one of thee Ohio State men in the Top 10 as the Scarlet and Gray placed third as a team.
- He finished the 8K in a time of 24:33.9, setting a personal best.
- It was just his second cross country race back after missing all of his sophomore campaign. As a freshman in 2021, he ran in all six meets and was in the Ohio State Top 5 in each. In the season opener he was sixth overall and second for the Buckeyes.
- The electrical and computer engineering major is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
- Danson was part of a combined shutout on Sunday vs. Stanford, playing 54:07 in goal before giving way to Kelly Davis in a 6-0 win over Stanford.
- Through six games, Danson has a 1.04 goals-against average and .759 save percentage, which both rank among the best in the Big Ten.
- The defense in front of her has been stout over the last three games: against UC Davis, Louisville and Stanford, Ohio State has surrendered just eight shots on goal.
- Engel, the defending Big Ten cross country champion, crossed the finish line first for the second week in a row, winning the title at the Badger Classic in Madison, Wis.
- It was the sixth meet title for Engle, who has finished in the Top 2 in eight of nine races, with the ninth a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades.
- In all, she has been in the Top 16 in 14 of her last 15 races, with the lone exception the 2021 NCAA Championships when she qualified as an individual.
- Engel, a health sciences major and USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete, and the No. 16-ranked Buckeyes are off this week before running in the elite Virginia Invitational Sept. 23. The course will also serve as the site for the 2023 NCAA Championships.
- In Saturday's 35-7 home-opening win vs. Youngstown State, Harrison Jr. caught seven passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
- His 71-yard TD reception on the opening drive was the longest catch of his career. He'd added a 39-yard touchdown reception later in the quarter.
- Harrison Jr. surpassed 1,500 career receiving yards in the game. He enters this Saturday's game vs. Western Kentucky with 19 receiving TDs in his career. One more touchdown reception would make him the ninth player with 20 or more in his career.
- Kaitlyn Hoffman stepped into the libero role for the first time in her collegiate career this past weekend against two top-six opponents and led the Buckeyes with 3.71 digs/set (26 total) through two matches.
- Hoffman began the weekend with a then career-high eight digs in three sets at No. 5 Stanford, also recording her first collegiate match with more than one ace (2).
- She totaled a career-high 18 digs in four sets the next day against No. 6 Oregon, continuing her ace streak to three-consecutive matches.
- Hoffman leads the Buckeyes with an average of 3.09 digs/set this season.
- McGinty was named to the 2023-24 ANNIKA Award Preseason Watch List, her second straight season earning the honor.
- The Buckeyes opened their season this week at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, playing two rounds on Monday.
- McGinty led the way for the Buckeyes, shooting under par in both rounds. She carded a 71 (-1) in the first round and a 69 (-3) in round two and was tied for sixth place going into the final round on Tuesday.
- Molly made 11 saves in helping the Buckeyes to two victories last week
- The lone goal she allowed came on a penalty kick
- The 2-0 shutout of Auburn on Sunday was the second shutout of her career
- She made two tremendous saves against the Tigers that kept all momentum with the Buckeyes, which was key in the victory
- Fired a career-best 12-under 201 (66-64-71) to finish eighth at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
- His first two rounds of 66 and 64 were both career-low rounds and his 130 total set the program's 36-hole scoring record
- His 201 total was eight shots lower than his previous 54-hole career low
- He helped the Buckeyes finish fourth in the event with program records of 37-under par and an 815 54-hole score
- Played the full 90 minutes on the road at Butler and scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory
- Wootton, the 2022 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, leads the Buckeyes with 13 shots and shots on goal with six
- Wootton has played in 49 career matches with the Buckeyes and owns six game-winning goals
- Ohio State opens the Big Ten Conference portion of the 2023 schedule Friday vs. Penn State at JOMS (7 p.m.)
