Buckeyes get five goals from five different players
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The start of the Ohio State field hockey season got off on a winning note Friday evening, as the Buckeyes' offense kicked into high gear and led the way in a 5-2 victory over Lehigh at Ulrich Field in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Short Story
Ohio State (1-0) fell behind 1-0 late in the first quarter, but quickly turned the tide with back-to-back goals within 1:10 of each other to take a lead they'd never relinquish.
Fifth-year senior Delaney Lawler, who was one of five goal scorers on the night, put Ohio State on the board with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter and Claudia Thomas followed 1:10 later off assists from Anne Marie Krebs and Hallie Brost.
Ohio State would score once more in the second quarter and then once each in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Krebs, a freshman from Louisville, Ky., had a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Lawler's tally at 11:02 in the first quarter was unassisted, followed quickly by Thomas.
- Krebs worked her goal in just before the halftime buzzer, as she found the back of the next with 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Ohio State a 3-1 lead at halftime.
- The only scoring of the third quarter belonged to Leanne Bough, who found the back of the cage with 57 seconds remaining in the quarter.
- Lehigh would cut the Buckeye lead to 4-2 in the 55th minute, but Cameryn Forgash countered with her first goal of the season with 4:10 remaining in the game. It was assisted by freshman Brenna Bough.
Buckeye This and That
- Sisters Leanne and Brenna Bough played in a game together for the first time since 2018, when Leanne was a senior at Whitney Point High School and Brenna was in eighth grade.
- Three newcomers were in Ohio State's starting lineup on Friday: Krebs and Bough, both freshmen who combined for four points, and Julie Rodijk, a fifth-year senior transfer from UAlbany.
- Two other freshmen saw action off the bench: Reagan Eickhoff and Cam Standish
- Makenna Webster assisted on Leanne Bough's third-quarter goal.
- The Buckeyes improved to 5-2 in season-opening games under head coach Jarred Martin.
- Ohio State is now 4-0 all-time against Lehigh and has scored four or more goals in every game.
- The Buckeyes outshot Lehigh 18-10 and each team finished with nine penalty corners.
- Senior goalkeeper Abby Danson faced seven shots on goal and made five saves. It was her 39th career start and 20th win.
