Armstrong Becomes World Champion, Buckeyes Shine in Fukuoka

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the final day of the Aquatics World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Sunday, former Ohio State swimmer Hunter Armstrong won gold for Team USA in the 50 back to become a world champion. After finishing third in the prelims (24.49) and second in the semifinals (24.41), Armstrong turned in a speedy time of 24.05 in the finals to earn his victory.
Competition in Fukuoka began on July 14 and wrapped up on Sunday, with the Buckeyes turning in strong performances for their federations.
In addition to Armstrong's gold medal, he claimed bronze in the 100 back earlier in the week, swimming the event in 52.58 in the finals. He cut over a second off his prelims time (53.94). He claimed the eighth and final spot in the 100 back finals after his time of 53.21 in the semifinals.
Lena Hentschel claimed the first medal for the Buckeyes, earning bronze in the mixed 3-meter & 10-meter team dive. Her and her team, competing for Germany, scored 432.15 to earn bronze. Hentschel placed ninth in the 3-meter synchronized finals, with her and her partner scoring 272.67.
Ruslan Gaziev had a successful week of swimming for Team Canada. He started the week by helping his team to a fifth-place finish in the finals of the 4x100 free relay; they turned in an overall time of 3:12.05 with Gaziev swimming splits of 22.32 and 24.98. In the mixed 4x100 medley relay, Gaziev and Canada finished sixth (3:43.72) in the finals. They followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the 4x200 medley relay, placing fourth with an overall time of 7:10.67. Gaziev swam a split time of 1:47.73. In the mixed 4x100 free relay, Gaziev recorded a FINA A cut time in prelims with his lead-off leg time of 48.27, which is just two milliseconds shy of the school 100 free record of 48.25 set by Armstrong in 2022. At finals, Gaziev and Team Canada placed fourth with a time of 3:23.82; Gaziev's split was 47.58. Gaziev wrapped up the week helping Canada to a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 medley relay (3:32.61).
