
13 Buckeyes Headed to Japan for World Aquatics Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A contingent of 13 Buckeyes from the Ohio State swimming and diving and synchronized (artistic) swimming programs are headed to Fukuoka, Japan for the World Aquatics Championships July 14-30.
Artistic swimming will take place July 14-21, diving is scheduled for July 14-22 and swimming will be contested July 22-30.
"With 13 Buckeyes representing their respective countries in Japan, Ohio State continues to provide a world-class platform for young people to pursue their dreams at the highest levels of the aquatic disciplines" Director of Swimming & Diving Bill Dorenkott said. "The Ohio State University boasts one of the strongest legacies in the world throughout the history of swimming, diving, and artistic swimming. The World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan is simply another opportunity to show the world the special things happening in Columbus, Ohio. Go Bucks!"
Charlie Clark, Hunter Armstrong and Lyle Yost will compete for Team USA. Clark and Armstrong secured their World Championship spots at the Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis earlier this month and Yost locked up his spot at Spring Nationals. Clark set a school record time of 14:50.84 en route to a second-place finish in the 1500 free. Armstrong won the 100 back with a time of 52.33, defeating four-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy by .06 seconds. Yost was the NCAA Champion on the 1-meter board this year and was the national Diver of the Year. At Spring Nationals, he earned a silver medal on the 1-meter with a score of 446.25.
Representing Slovakia are Teresa Ivan and coach Ignacio Gayo. Ivan had a stellar performance at Slovakian Nationals last month to earn her spot in Japan. She became the Slovakian national champion in the 50 free with a time of 25.15, which is one of the top 50 times in the world. She also became the national champion in the 100 free (56.11) and 50 back (29.57). Gayo is an Associate Head Coach for the Buckeyes and will serve on Slovakia's coaching staff.
Ruslan Gaziev will represent Canada and Buckeye alum Kristen Romano will swim for Puerto Rico. Earlier this summer, Gaziev earned a silver medal in the 100 free (48.78) at Mare Nostrum Monaco and he recently won the 50 free (22.75), 100 free (49.25) and 200 free (1:49.61) at the Los Angeles Invite. Romano won three gold medals and one bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games last month.
In addition to Yost, Lena Hentschel (Germany), Ciara McGing (Ireland) and Mo Noaman (Egypt) will be competing on the boards in Japan.
"I couldn't be prouder of the four divers, representing four countries, at the World Championships this year," said diving coach Justin Sochor. "The Buckeye divers train hard, play hard, and continue to be leaders at a global level. It's a great year to be a Buckeye!"
At the Diving World Cup in China in April, 2020 Olympic medalist Hentschel earned a silver medal in the mixed 3-meter and 10-meter team (425.35) and a bronze medal in the synchronized 3-meter (265.26). McGing qualified for the 10-meter platform at the Diving World Cup in Canada in May. She scored a 220.50. Noaman is set to compete in the 1-meter springboard this week.
Representing the Buckeye synchronized (artistic) swimming program are alumnae Nikki Dzurko and Hiea-Yoon Kang and rising junior Ruby Remati.
"It is unbelievably impressive to have such a large contingent of Ohio State aquatic Buckeyes at this year's World Championships," Ohio State head coach Holly Vargo Brown said. "We are especially proud of Ruby, Nikki and Hiea-Yoon and are very excited to see what they accomplish this week."
The trio of Buckeyes will represent Team USA, with Dzurko and Remati swimming and Kang serving as an assistant coach. Kang, regarded as one of the country's premier coaches, continues her work with the national team duet swimmers.
2023 Ohio State graduate Dzurko last swam with the senior national team in 2020-21. In her final season at Ohio State, she earned her third solo national title to help the Buckeyes to the 2023 national championship. Dzurko will compete in the acrobatic team category.
Remati, who was a duet alternate for the Tokyo Olympic Games held in 2021, will again compete in the duet category for the United States. This year she earned the Individual High Point award at the U.S. Collegiate Championships with national titles in duet and A Figures. She will compete in the free and technical duet and technical team categories.
