No. 10 Buckeyes Fall to No. 5 Wolverines in B1G Tournament Final, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the Big Ten women's tennis championship match between the Top 2 seeds, No. 1 Michigan defeated No. 2 Ohio State, 4-2, Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.
The No. 5-ranked Wolverines (22-3) rallied to win the doubles point. Ohio State, ranked 10th, tied the match on Sydni Ratliff's straight-set singles win, but Michigan prevailed in the next two completed matches for a 3-1 advantage. The remaining three singles matches went to a third set, with Ohio State winning the second set on all three courts. Lucia Marzal notched a second point for Ohio State with a court four win before a Michigan victory on court three sealed the championship. This was the third year in a row the Buckeyes and Wolverines faced off in the tournament final.
Ohio State, now 20-7 on the year, awaits an expected NCAA berth, with the field announced at 6 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com. First and second round matches will be played on 16 campus sites next weekend.
Marzal and Shelly Bereznyak were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the matches.
In Doubles
- Michigan came from behind to take the doubles point with a win on court two.
- Ohio State's duo of Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff downed Jaedan Brown and Andrea Cerdan, 6-2, on court one.
- The Wolverines posted a 6-3 win on court three, with Merri Kelly and Kari Miller defeating Kolie Allen and Danielle Willson, to even doubles.
- On court two, Michigan's tandem of Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones rallied from a 2-5 deficit to top Buckeyes Isabelle Boulais and Shelly Bereznyak. 7-5, and clinch the doubles point.
In Singles
- 34 Sydni Ratliff tied the match, as she was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against No. 37 Kari Miller on court two.
- The Wolverines won the next two matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead. No. 20 Irina Cantos Siemers fell to No. 29 Jaedan Brown, 6-3, 6-3, on court one and on court six Danielle Willson was topped by No. 117 Gala Mesochoritou, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
- On the remaining three courts, all three Buckeyes rallied after dropping the first set to win the second and force a decisive third.
- Lucia Marzal, on court four, lost the first set to No. 77 Lily Jones but cruised in the second, 6-1. The Buckeye jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third. Jones drew to 4-3, but a hold and break gave Marzal the set and the match. Marzal is 18-2 in dual matches this spring.
- The Wolverines clinched the title with a win on court three, where No. 47 Julia Fliegner defeated Isabelle Boulais, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
- Shelly Bereznyak was down in the third set vs. Andrea Cerdan on court five when play was suspended.
