No. 10 Buckeyes Down Nebraska 4-1 to Advance in Big Ten Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women's tennis team opened its Big Ten Tournament action with a 4-1 win over Nebraska in the quarterfinals Friday in West Lafayette, Ind. After dropping the doubles point, Ohio State won four singles matches, with three in straight sets, to advance to the semifinals.
Isabelle Boulais, who clinched the team victory over the No. 10 seed Huskers (15-10) with a three-set win, and Shelly Bereznyak both won in singles and doubles. Lucia Marzal and Irina Cantos Siemers also picked up singles victories.
Ohio State, the No. 2 seed, is now 19-6 on the year. The Buckeyes will face the winner of a quarterfinal match between No. 3 Illinois and No. 6 Iowa at 2 p.m. Saturday for a spot in the championship match.
Quoting head coach Melissa Schaub
"Today was a battle. There are always going to be some nerves for the first match of the tournament and I think we definitely felt that. I'm happy with the way we competed at spots though. We didn't go down and we showed some toughness that I hope we can take some confidence from."
In Doubles
- The Huskers took the doubles point.
- On court two, the Buckeye tandem of Isabelle Boulais and Shelly Bereznyak dropped just one game against Isabel Gallego and Ana Carmen Zamburek.
- On court one, No. 33 ranked Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff fell 6-3 to No. 45 Samantha Alicea and Raphaelle Lacasse.
- Nebraska claimed the doubles point, as Lucy Loy and Vivien Sandberg won the final three games to defeat Kolie Allen and Danielle Willson, 7-5.
In Singles
- The Buckeyes won the first two matches quickly in straight sets to go ahead 2-1.
- On court five, Lucia Marzal defeated Anfisa Danilchenko, 6-1, 6-2, followed by a 6-1, 6-3 victory by No. 94-ranked Shelly Bereznyak over Jillian Roa on court six.
- Irina Cantos Siemers, ranked 20th, prevailed in straight sets for a 3-1 Buckeye lead. After winning the first set vs. Isabel Adrover Gallego, 6-3, Cantos Siemers took the second in a tiebreak. The Buckeye was up a break 4-2 but the Husker won two in a row to get on serve. The players held the rest of the way for a tiebreak, which Cantos Siemers won 7-1.
- The remaining matches all went to a third set.
- Isabelle Boulais clinched the match on court three against Ana Zamburek. Boulais dropped just one game in the first set but lost the second, 6-4. In the third, Boulais was down a break early but won the final four games to take the set, 6-3, and the match.
- The Buckeyes trailed in the third set on courts two and four when play was suspended. Sydni Ratliff won the first but dropped the second on court two. On court five, Kolie Allen rallied to force a third set.
- Marzal is 16-2 on the year, while Bereznyak has a 14-1 dual match ledger and Cantos Siemers is 14-4. The trio leads the Buckeyes in dual match victories.
