
Barnes, Bilka Win Gold at 2023 World Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State women’s hockey players Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka helped the United States win gold at the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championships on Sunday in Brampton, Ontario. The United States defeated Canada, 6-3, to win its first gold since 2019 and 10th overall.
Barnes added the insurance goal for the U.S., recording an empty netter with 1:58 to play in the game. She tallied eight points on two goals and six assists in the tournament. Bilka added seven points on four goals and three assists.
Ohio State alumni Emma Maltais and Natalie Spooner earned the silver medal with Team Canada. Spooner recorded six points in the tournament. Maltais skated in all seven games and tallied a helper.
2022 Ohio State graduate Andrea Braendli played in goal for Switzerland in the bronze medal game. She posted 30 saves, but the Swiss ultimately fell to Czechia, 3-2. She led the tournament with 175 saves.
Rising sophomore Sofie Lundin also skated at this year’s worlds, playing for Sweden. She finished the tournament with four points, including a goal against France.
