
No. 9 Buckeyes Shut Out No. No. 16 Badgers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State women's tennis team shut out No. 16 Wisconsin, 7-0, Friday evening in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. The Buckeyes claimed the doubles point with 6-4 wins on courts two and three and then notched six singles victories, including four in straight sets.
The Buckeyes, now 9-5 on the year and 2-0 in the Big Ten, will host Minnesota at 11 a.m. Sunday and close out their three-match homestand vs. Purdue at 3 p.m. March 24. Wisconsin, which had a nine-match winning streak end, is now 12-3 on the year and 3-1 in B1G play.
Quoting head coach Melissa Schaub
"We played a complete match today. Our schedule has been hard but I think we showed a lot of toughness today. I am really proud of that."
In Doubles
- With 6-4 victories on courts two and three, claiming the final games in both matches, the Buckeyes won the doubles point.
- On court three, the duo of Kolie Allen and Danielle Willson faced the tandem of Taylor Cataldi and Charmaine Seah. The Buckeyes were down a break, 3-4, but won the match's final three games for the victory. Allen and Willson held on the no-ad point for 4-all, then followed with a break and a hold.
- The Buckeye tandem of Isabelle Boulais and Shelly Bereznyak took on Alina Mukhortova and Xinyu Cai on court two. The Buckeyes were up early, 3-1, before back-to-back games from the Badgers evened the match at three. The next three games were all breaks on the no-ad point, putting the Buckeyes ahead 5-4. Ohio State served it out to clinch the doubles point.
- On court one, the Buckeyes' No. 17-ranked duo of Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff was leading 6-5 against No. 54 Ava Markham and Maria Sholokhova. Ohio State was down 5-3 before winning three games in a row (saving match point with UW serving 5-4).
In Singles
- The Buckeyes swept the singles matches, with four victories in straight sets.
- 94 Shelly Bereznyak dropped just one game vs. No. 107 Xinyu Cai on court five, 6-0, 6-1.
- 20-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers followed, as she was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over No. 56 Ava Markham on court one.
- On court three, Isabelle Boulais did not lose a game in the first set against Alina Mukhortova but dropped the second, 6-1. In the third, Boulais pulled away at the end for a 6-3 set win, clinching the Buckeye victory.
- Lucia Marzal defeated Taylor Cataldi, 6-3, 6-4, on court four, winning the final four games of the second set.
- The court six match went to a super tiebreaker. Buckeye Akanksha Bhan won the first set in a tiebreaker against Charmaine Seah but was shut out in the second. In the match tiebreaker, the Buckeye was a 10-3 winner.
- The court two match closed out the night. No. 28 Sydni Ratliff defeated No. 104 Maria Sholokhova, 7-6 (5), 6-4, for the sweep.
- Bereznyak and Marzal are both 10-1 in dual matches to lead the Buckeyes this spring.
