COLUMBUS, Ohio – Graduate defenseman Cayla Barnes is this week's WCHA Defender of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first of her career as a Buckeye.  Â
Â
Barnes and the No. 1 Ohio State women's hockey team swept Minnesota State last weekend to close out the first half of the 2023-24 season. She led the team with five blocked shots and finished with a team and league-high +5 on the weekend. Barnes also helped the Buckeye penalty kill finish 3-for-3 in the series.
Â
The Eastvale, Calif. native tallied a goal in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Mavericks and added two assists in Sunday's 4-1 win for her fourth multi-point game of the season. She has now extended her point streak to seven games. Recording three points on the weekend, she tied with teammate Hadley Hartmetz for the most points by a WCHA defenseman last weekend.
Â
Barnes will take the ice this weekend with USA Hockey in the December games of the USA vs. Canada Rivalry Series. The games are set for Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. in Ontario.
