Welsh Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman Rocco Welsh, a 174-pounder from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week by the league office Wednesday.
Welsh, competing in his first collegiate event, won five matches last Sunday at the 2023 Clarion Open in his home state to win the individual title.
He won the first match of his Ohio State career by technical fall (22-5) over Isabelle Rollinsford of Brown University. He then pinned Brody Baumann of Purdue before rattling off three wins by decision, including the finals match over Sammy Starr of Navy (8-2).
The No. 7 Buckeyes open the dual season at No. 3 Virginia Tech Friday (ESPN+/7 p.m.) before returning to Columbus for a noon match Sunday against Edinboro (B1G+).
