COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7/6 Ohio State women's basketball team opens the 2023-24 season against No. 21/21 USC on Monday in the Hall of Fame Series, held in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET in a game broadcast on TruTV.
- Ohio State enters the season ranked seventh in the AP poll and sixth in the coaches' poll after making its first Elite Eight appearance in 30 years last season. The Buckeyes return 10 players from the 2022-23 roster and 72% of last season's scoring, including getting Jacy Sheldon fully healthy. In the offseason, OSU added three transfers and two freshmen.
- Sheldon and reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Cotie McMahon were both named to the Big Ten's Preseason Team as the Buckeyes were picked to finish second by the coaches and third by the media.
- McMahon was picked as a Preseason AP All-American Honorable Mention and named to the watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award. Sheldon was put on the watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award and transfer Celeste Taylor is on the watch list for the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award. This trio was also named to the Naismith Preseason Watch List.Â
- USC begins the season ranked 21st in both the AP Poll and the coaches' poll after returning to the NCAA Tournament in 2023 for the first time since 2014.
- The Trojans saw turnover in the offseason with two starters, six players total, returning from the 2022-23 roster and seven additions, highlighted by freshman Juju Watkins - 2023 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
- Rayah Marshall was named to the Pac-12's Preseason Team, while Watkins earned an honorable mention. Marshall was also selected to the watch list for the Lisa Leslie Award, while McKenzie Forbes is on the watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award.
- Ohio State and USC have played seven previous games with the Buckeyes holding the 4-3 edge in the all-time series. The teams most recently met on Nov. 19, 2006 in Columbus when the Buckeyes earned a 77-58 win.
- The teams' only previous meeting at a neutral site came on Dec. 29, 1986 at the O. Bowl Invite, where OSU was victorious by an 83-63 margin.
