COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's hockey team is back on top of the national rankings. This week, the Buckeyes received 18 first place votes, and 298 votes overall, in the USCHO.com poll to claim the No. 1 spot.
Ohio State earned its poll position with a sweep of then-ranked No. 1 Wisconsin last weekend at the OSU Ice Rink. On Friday, the Buckeyes shut out Wisconsin, 3-0, to hand the Badgers their first loss of the season. Extra time was needed to decide game two between the top two teams in the nation, with the Buckeyes winning, 2-1, in overtime. Jennifer Gardiner led the team with four points on the weekend, including three goals in the series. Hannah Bilka scored the team's overtime game-winning goal in Saturday's game. Goaltenders Raygan Kirk and Amanda Thiele each earned a win, with Kirk posting the shutout on Friday. The netminders combined to hold Wisconsin, who was averaging over six goals a game, to just one goal in the entire series.
With the sweep, the Buckeyes now hold the top spot in the WCHA standings with 28 points. Wisconsin is in second with 25, followed by third-place Minnesota with 22 points.
Ohio State is 11-1-0 on the year and has already faced off against No. 2 Colgate, No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 4 Minnesota and No. 9 Minnesota Duluth. The team is 7-1-0 against ranked opponents this year.
The Buckeyes will host top-10 teams in their next two series at the OSU Ice Rink. Ohio State plays No. 6 St. Lawrence this weekend, Nov. 24-25, and then faces off against No. 10 St. Cloud State Dec. 1-2. Both series will have a 6 p.m. puck drop for game one and 3 p.m. start for game two. Tickets for Ohio State women's hockey games can be purchased HERE.
